When applying dots

How many targets do i generally want to apply dots to when in pvp and pve. Im new at the lock thing.

Currently, dots do almost nothing by themselves but they enable huge damage from Malefic Rapture which does damage to every target afflicted by your dots based on how many dots they have on them. So you basically want to get as many dots as you can on as many targets as you can then burst them all down with Malefic Rapture.

The decision making you need to do is based on how long you expect things to survive - you need mobs to live for about 30 seconds or more if you’re going to put in the effort of multidotting more than 2 mobs. In AOE situation prioritize abilities that spread dots to all enemies like Seed of Corruption and Vile Taint/Phantom singularity while applying Agony to only 2-4 of them, then put a UA/Haunt on a higher hp priority mob and start spamming Malefic Rapture.

In PVP make sure to take the Rampant Afflictions pvp Talent and get your UAs out first on 3 targets then start loading them up with other dots and drop your AOE Dot of choice (Phantom Singularity or Vile Taint). If your UAs get dispelled, re-cast them and then find a quiet corner somewhere to spam Malefic Rapture where you’re not likely to be interrupted.

nice nice thanks for the info. Im enjoying affliction right now, Ive always told myself the class would be boring due to waiting for dots to kill your target but im really enjoying the dot everything up and do massive dmg.

I don’t PVP much so I’ll be talkin about PVE. In a aoe situation you’ll be looking to maintain about 4 agonies.

If its 2 or 3 targets then try to keep your dots up on all of them.

You want dots up for more rapture damage but you dont want to spend 90% of your time refreshing dots with little to no time to rapture in most situations. Its balancing act in the end.

this is what I was having trouble with. By the time I was ready to rapture, my dots were getting ready to fall off.

Sounds like your applying to many, assuming I have Vile Taint talented a aoe pull would look like this:

pre cast seed > 4 agonies > Vile Taint > Unstable Affliction on priority target> raptures till Vile Taint falls off.

With Vile Taint your damage windows are based around 20 second cycles so you do the above and spam rapture and then you spend the time between then and your next taint coming off cooldown by keeping up agony and UA and channeling drain soul and sniping low hp targets for shards.

The “hard” part here is trying to avoid capping but have as many shards as possible for your next taint window. Taint has 15 seconds left and I’m at 5 shards? Time to rapture once so I’m not wasting any shards I might be getting. Once vile is off CD its time to repeat the above.

This is assuming level 50 however since you get added duration for a dot or two as you level.

If your meaning about how to keep them up on 3 targets than its really the same thing just changes a bit depending on if they are stacked or spread, if spread then run absolute corruption for perma corruption, if they are stacked then Writhe in Agony would be it (maybe Vile Taint depending). You’ll probably have siphon life talented in this case so youll be keeping up Agony, siphon life, and UA up on the three targets as much as possible.

Right now without the conduit increasing agony duration you can max out at about 6 targets before you will start dropping agony during rapture spam.

Seed, Agony x6, Taint, Glare, Rapture

If you don’t lead with Seed you can’t do as many agony targets.
