Trigger warnings in video games and movies.

I have failed to realize how much of an issue this has become until I started reading the reviews of Thor: Love and Thunder

Now, I’m seeing regular news updates about content requiring “trigger warnings” with movies, games, and such. Pivotal scenes and surprise endings need an almost direct reference before they are shown.

I’ve seen the usual disclaimer of “violence, language, and blood.” This goes beyond ratings; now it’s more specific to the point it’s possibly spoiling content to avoid upsetting someone.

Maybe I’m old. I grew up without disclaimers for potential stressors to any and all content. No matter the genre. I grew up expecting the unknown, the thrill, the shock, the fear, the fight, the passion, the romance, and whatever resolution.

Warcraft is no exception. It has diverse stories. Some are pretty intense, but I enjoy discovering them as they are presented in the course of my journey, watching a reveal or a cinematic.

Is this a valid concern? Are we to expect a lengthy preface to content before it’s shown?

These triggers could be infinitely nuanced. Who or what defines it? Can you modify to a diverse audience?

ROLF people need a trigger warning for cancer scenes but not for murder. Love it.

Edit: Just realized I made a mistake. There is a trigger warning for murder and it’s in the rating of the movie.

So I guess the question is: should it be added to the rating? My initial feeling is no, it shouldn’t. Plenty of rated G movies have sad situations. I had cancer. I’ve seen a movie that started out talking about the exact kind of cancer I had. It surprised me but I didn’t feel like I needed a warning.

I’m not an emotionally connected person so its very difficult to offend, anger, or upset me unless you’re super pushy. You can spoil an entire movie right to my face, I’m still going to watch it without feeling robbed of anything.

There are some things in life that people get upset about that baffle me and even after they explain it, still does not make a lick of sense to me. I was at Firehouse Sub with my cousin and she got angry when they didn’t include the pickle in the box. I pointed out she doesn’t eat the pickle anyway and always throws it out. She tells me that’s not the point, its the principle of the matter so she went up to the counter, complained, and got an apology from the manager; got her pickle, threw it out when we left. I don’t understand.

I hate “trigger warnings.” I love being surprised in movies!

The more “out of left field” a thing is, the more I like it.
