I was online during the infamous Illidan Funeral Crash, from the Alliance guild “Serenity Now”, back in Vanilla.
It was early 2006, like April or something.
TLDR- A guildmate in a Horde guild died IRL, and they decided to hold a funeral in-game at the hot springs in Winterspring, on Illidan- a PvP server.
Ofc, Alliance attacked.
Most Horde were wearing RP gear with no stats, so it was a slaughter.
And I was Horde, no less.
I wasn’t 60 yet (was high lvl 40’s or low lvl 50’s at the time), but I got my butt over to Winterspring because all Horde were rallying to get revenge on the Alliance that attacked.
I wanted to help in any way I could, lol.
I don’t think I actually did anything, but I do remember the outrage all over the server and chat channels.
And I remember seeing all the skeletons, though.
So much chaos- it makes me sad we’ll never see something similar to it again, due to CRZ and phasing.
I’d post a video, but all of them are pretty vulgar and have aged kinda poorly lol. (Edgy teens and early 2000’s humor.)
It was probably single-handedly the most controversial thing that’s happened on Illidan, in its entire server history.
It was also one of those things that cemented me as a Horde player early on- those evil Alliance, they must pay!
