What's with this error message?

BNet will not launch the game. Here’s the error that is reported:

An updated version of World of Warcraft is available. Please launch the Battle.net app to download the update.

However, this error is delivered in a text window, not a Blizzard Error Message.

Classic launches just fine. Retail? Nope. Can anyone explain what’s going on and what I need to do to the game to launch?

Hey Mortalis! Thank you for reaching out with those details on the error you’re seeing. The steps below will guide you through “clean re-installing” the Battle.net application, as this sort of behavior with the Battle.net Desktop App is typically caused by corrupted Battle.net files:

  1. Uninstall the Blizzard Battle.net App (skip Step 6 for now, we will re-install later).

  2. Next (before re-installing) delete any Battle.net, Blizzard, and/or Blizzard Entertainment folders in the Windows temporary file locations (if you don’t see all three, just delete the ones you have):

    • Press Windows Key + R and type: %LOCALAPPDATA%. Delete any Battle.net, Blizzard, and/or Blizzard Entertainment folders.
    • Repeat the process for %APPDATA%, %TEMP%, and %PROGRAMDATA%. Delete any Battle.net, Blizzard, and/or Blizzard Entertainment folders.
  3. Finally, re-install the Battle.net Desktop App.

If that doesn’t do the trick, please provide a DxDiag so we can further investigate the problem. Here are the instructions:

  1. Press Windows Key + R.
  2. Type DxDiag and press Enter.
  3. In the DxDiag window, click Save All Information.
  4. Name the file “dxdiag” and click Save
  5. Once you have that made, open the file. You’ll need to copy and paste the contents of the Text document into the post, and put four Tilde (~) marks above the DXDiag. It’ll look like this:
DXDiag goes here

If you have issues pasting here, please use Pastebin and post the link (ex: Pastebin (dot) com/123456).

Thank you. Worked just fine.

All I did was go into task manager, scrolled down to world of warcraft, right clicked, then clicked end task. Then i went into the battle.net desktop app and at the top right corner i manually started the download for the update. I never trust what Blizzard says when it comes to technical support or pretty much anything else. Last time I did, it completely screwed up the whole game for me and had to completely reinstall wow and all of my addons. Never again.

This thread is a year old. If you have an issue, making your own thread is better than bumping a dead one.

A lot of times doing a full UI reset, which requires you to reinstall your addons, is advised.

It is basically impossible for technical support’s advice to cause your game files to be corrupted. If you are specific about what happened we could maybe give some more insight.
