As has been noted, these types of problems existed 14 years ago and were why the game eventually evolved into personal loot (good and bad). If I remember, Cata was when armor-type specific locks were added, which wouldn’t stop a plate from rolling OS plate, but would stop a warrior rolling on leather.
It’s also why we have this wave of “everything HR!” now. The game rules allow rolling, and there’s not a singular dominant agreement on etiquette/behavior within that.
Personally most of the time I will defer to whoever is filling a particular role, but I think it’s also very defensible that if you haven’t clarified any “loot rules” you have in advance, you have to be prepared that people are going to have a different pov, particularly around rolling on OS vs. MS.
At the least, if you have expectations, you probably have to use the “social pillar!” and have that discussion prior to something dropping you think you have dibs on.
