8 hours of maintenance for what?
It’s as if nobody reads the maintenance flag at all. They’re doing a .5 update, that takes a minute.

no it doesnt. .5 patch was predownloaded and ready to go on my pc 2 days ago

Just a couple pixels moved around…
They’re just enabling all of the latest time gates. Don’t worry, this downtime is just so that new content can be unlocked over the next 2 months.

Fair, so when were they supposed to apply it to the SERVERS exactly? Oh that’s right…during MAINTENANCE! Hooray for logic! (They do need them offline to do that, I gather)

I honestly had no idea today was a patch day lol. Was in Houston visiting my fam for a couple days. No one told me anything
You got just enough time to make it back to where you were before servers are up
But but, our PCs are where all the data lives! What do their stinkin’ servers do?!

There is a simple answer. Blizz does it because it’s likely cheaper for business hours maint support on the cheaper legacy platforms they use and …wait for it…wait for it…because they can. Trust me when I tell you that you will never fully understand the reason for the downtime in this game and asking about it will simply get you crucified.
To make you ask that question and then have everyone say “READ THE FLAG ON THE FRONT PAGE!”. Cause, you know, Blizz is out to get you? I really don’t have a better answer for you
