Whats up with the Kobyss?

I’m not sure if its because the necromancy, using Arathi captives as bait or the fact they didn’t crawl out of the undersea until the crystal went dark for the first time but these guys creep me the heck out.

According to a Worldsoul Memory event, they were tribe of Ankoan who fought off the Naga, and became changed… somehow.

  • A group of Ankoan, so historically Murloc changed by the Vale of Eternal Blossoms into Jinyu then turned into underwater tribes post-Sundering
  • Fought against the Naga
  • The fish questline in the same area that turns into a midnbender escorted by a giant “abyssal kraken” says that the Kobyss are “borrowing” their power from “the deep”
  • from the other Arathi questlines we know they are being “displaced” (by what we don’t know)
  • from the Azj’kahet and Harranir questlines we know where Azj’kahet currently is used to be a giant lake that was drained by the roots of the giant tree (Elunahir, so post-Ordering) but the Kobyss are coming up from the deep underwater tunnels under what was the lake

They are just your friendly neighborhood MurderFishPeople.

Honestly I think they took some inspiration from the Lovecraftian Deep Ones. I wonder if there is a Dagon parallel somewhere down in the deeps as well. Fun to ponder.

Now then only if the undead they raised had free will, then we could chill

I wonder if the Kobyss are too far gone or would respond well to the Ankoan/Jinyu reaching out to them.

I have a feeling it is related to the murlocs we see in Nazjatar that also used necromancy. And that was the greenish looking kind.

Most likely. They reminded me of the Deep Ones when I first saw them (minus Lovecraft’s racist analogy).

I was going to say they might be Jinyu or murlocs messed up by necromancy and void magics. But it seems that might be so.

Anything related to the darkest of the seas will bring in the worst of creatures. Try fighting them in Vash’jir and see what happens under the sea.

They have an Innsmouth vibe to them, I had assumed they were using the Arathi they drag off to hybridize. That’s how the Lovecraft do.

If they’re just sick Jinyu, that’s boring but probably better for all of us.

did anyone do that quest with the talking fish that was cool

That quest gave me N’Zoth vibes. Perhaps it was a hint that he’s still around and kicking

They seem like an homage to the deep ones from hp Lovecraft
