What's up with Japanese game titles?

Actually, that’s probably a bad example. We’ve become so used to Pokemon that we’ve forgotten how weird the title is.

Here’s some more:

Romancing Saga
Fire Emblem
Valkyrie Profile
Langrisser
Blazing Souls Accelate
Ys Chronicles

I think my point is that the translator could of compensated for deference’s in context and meaning and come up with an English title that at least made sense to English speakers.

english and japanese are way to differnt of languages things that make sense dont in the other specially when it comes to how things are named and said. i have heard it said english is one of the hardest languages to learn on the planet.

It’s called “Engrish”. Translations are often very bad and come out meaning something very different to a native speaker of English than the Japanese fan thinks they say.

Couple things there.

they’d need to work out a deal with a top Japanese payment systems. Most MMO’s in Japan use a “middle man” service for payment.

When eve tried to establish a Japanese presence they used one of these. messed upo my main account too. it still ahs me set for japanese payment in yen. a cold alt account was offlined in cut over so its still US based.

Middlemen like to get paid so this was probably cutting into Bobby’s yacht fund.

And getting fan base to support non english speakers. when eve did a Japan push it brought in some numbers. Some Japanese can speak english. But not all. So it made comms complicated for some ops as we picked up new JDM players.

Helped a few out…but it ain’t easy translating Bronx to Japanese. I am from philly so I now of the new york dialect.

Why doe he say axe all the time?

Ah my new japanese online buddy…he is saying ask. Wait till he says yon (number 4). Or chocolate.

You gotta play the game to find out!

It would probably be called

ウォークラフトの世界

That’s uōkurafuto no sekai, with the first word being phonetic.

In fact if you Google ウォークラフトの世界, the game comes up.

Dramatization:

Japanese game executive:

"Ok Bob let me see the English Translation you made for our new game title:
“The fairy Princess and her magic wand”

Bob: “Here it is Boss.”

Executive: “Wait a minute. I can read English very well. You translated it to:
“Flowery dog lost identity.” What? This is abysmal” Make a correct translation."

Bob: “OK boss. I changed it, Hows this one?”
Executive: "Now you changed it to: “Blatant fish hate penguin.”

Executive: “Are you crazy” Make a proper correction, immediately."

Bob: “Ok Boss.” “here ya go.”

Executive: "Now you changed into: “Giraffs indutrial donkey lady.”

Executive: “Noooooo you idiot. What are you doing?!”

DC Comics has a Chinese superhero team where they had a lot of fun with this idea.

All of the characters’ names are originally written in Chinese characters. Then they’re literally translated and those literal translation names are used in the (mainstream) English comic books.

So they have names like:
August General in Iron
Immortal Man in Darkness
Accomplished Perfect Physician
etc.

The Kingdom Hearts titles tend to be pretty weird.
Kingdom Hearts χ [chi] (A Greek letter pronounced like ‘kai’ in English, but in these games is pronounced ‘key’)
Kingdom Hearts χ (again pronounced like ‘kai’ in English, but in these games is pronounced ‘key’) Back Cover
Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ
Kingdom Hearts Union χ
Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep 0.2: A Fragmentary Passage

Those are actually very very good names.

Adol, the Wall Crusher Enabler.

How about the game that heavily influenced Revendreth, Bloodborne.
What’s the name of that recent one that has taken the gaming world by storm, directed with that guy who created Game of Thrones?
Most anticipated RPG ever made, a true love letter to fans.

Could be for cultural reasons.

Legend of Zelda was heavily influenced by some old or outdated concept of nature spirits I think? I’m not entirely sure.
