I ran three M+ plus horror shows last night.
I haven’t done M+ since since really around BoD. I leveled a paladin as ret and got him to ilvl 450-ish. Wanted to try Holy in some M+. I have healing experience so I’m not totally new to healing.
But holy cow, man. I ran a +2 Underrot with 27 deaths. I ran a +5 Atal where tank and dps quit after 1st wipe on Rezan (he was also 1st boss), and then for the cherry-on-top a 40+ death +5 Temple of Seth that did not finish (was on last boss).
It may be me. But I do have healing experience and was healing non-stop. I was always near last to die, so wasn’t like I died and group didn’t have heals, so we didn’t wipe b/c of my death.
Is this new normal right now for M+? Or did I just get three crappy pugs in a row?
Probably both. This week’s affixes are also a nightmare in my humble opinion. Bringing melee to quaking + sanguine just kills the dps and causes pug chaos.
I can’t speak for other tanks but I hate sanguine with the passion of a hundred suns. I will gladly deal with any affix combo, but when it comes to sanguine, it’s not fun at all. I’ll do it but I’m not happy about it.
I’m of the opinion that pools are too large, last too long, and that some mobs shouldn’t pool at all, e.g. bridge tentacles in Shrine.

I’m honestly impressed at how this is even possible.

Well it’s hard to say exactly what was going on just based on your post, but in my experience, it’s not at all uncommon to find players with little experience and/or no grasp of mechanics in lower level keys. As a result, they can somewhat paradoxically feel harder than higher level keys, especially for the healer.
I recommend getting the raider .io addon. That’ll at least let you see what kind of experience the party leader has before you apply. The down side is that someone with a good score is more likely to be looking for others with good scores, so you may have a harder time getting into those groups until you’ve raised your own score a little.
The difficulty of pug M+ runs generally increase at the lower key level, and get particularly ugly below 10.

I dread the +3-+6 range more than any other.

Yea I did a bunch of highish keys last night with my mates that would have been. Much smoother than most low pugs I have done by a mile.
That being said they are a great place to practice healing because it makes you react to all sorts of things hitting the fan.
Low end keys are always a great source of data to demonstrate the reality that high ilvl gear won’t save you from dangerous mechanics. There are plenty of trash and boss mechanics that will murder or near-murder you at ilvl 470-480 even in the +8-10 key range.
