Wow this is an oldie. One of MY oldies, even. 
Y’know, I don’t remember if I ever did go back and test that flare theory with the mines.
Guess I better get my hunter over there before I forget again.
Oh my! I went there years ago. I forgot all about that place. I’ll put that on my list of things to do for this evening.
FYI I did go back there and flares don’t reveal the landmine locations, however tracking mechanicals, does.
The mines don’t seem to do much damage anymore though… at least not to a level 51. They hit for maybe 1500 points instead of 90% health.
This is where the King of Stormwind (Varian Wrynn) was being held in a pit back in Classic 2004-2007, I remember exploring the island back in 2005 and finding him down there, it was so weird. The boy king sat the throne, with Lady Onyxia as his advisor, while Anduin’s father was stuck in a pit on the island, only a few miles from Onyxia’s lair.
This was used for the Scepter of the Shifting Sands questline as you needed the Draconics for Dummies.
