Does anyone every use them besides during the quests to open them?
I always forget they exist because I like just jumping on my dragon and flying to whatever I’d have taken the gate to get to.

I sure haven’t. I’m sure they have their uses, like getting closer to timed events, but 30 min cooldown when I can just fly.

They operate as zone wide shortcuts.

I think their positioning is a bit poor. If one of them was actually in Valdrakken and they had key spots like Feast/Siege/Trials, they’d probably get used on CD. As they’re setup now, nobody wants to fly → portal → fly, they just coast to the final spot.
Perhaps they’ll fix the system in 10.1 or 10.2 by adding more useful spots and lowering the CD.

I actually use all forms of transport in DF.
There’s a nice flow depending what I’m doing and how I’m feeling.
My first suspicion is that this is a travel option that will be more used in later patches, based on the clues and speculation I have heard so far.
