What's the point of Realms?

I get what they used to be, but they just seem like tech debt now?

Is there any player advantage to them?

computers do not have an unlimited amount of resources.
that is the only reason

Gameplay wise, not really. The game would be better without them.

Money wise, they keep people buying transfer so they can raid or join guilds with their friends. So of course they will stay.

At this point I think we need way more realm mergers.

Cut out CRZ except through the group finder, and merge more realms.

Personally i’m not a fan of all realms merging to one. Because while the population has certainly declined, if that happened, we’d basically have like a hundred thousand players in stormwind/orgrimmar, and that would be uncomfortable - at least to me.

To keep you from having to change that sweet, sweet name.
Think of your “realm” as your last name.

Servers don’t mean anything anymore.

Emerald Dream = Bleeding Hollow = Wyrmrest Accord = Moon Guard = Darkspear = Illidan = Dalaran

Merge them and watch the community rejoice as the world will feel more alive.

Dozens of low population and new player servers are schmuck bait that WILL ruin your enjoyment of WoW.

Nope. Realm choice does not matter anymore.

Ion had mentioned that the auction was limiting the size of realms. They’re working on that.

I disagree on Moon Guard. We are the Las Vegas server, we don’t need ya filthy peasants. We got so much personality still in terms of server community.

No, we don’t. There isn’t much of a server community there anymore either. Just like every single other server out there.

Part of the need for servers in games like WoW is to avoid a game-wide shutdown. If you think of WoW servers, they are basically redundant copies of each other, which provides troubleshooting of hardware when there is a problem. Not sure how many “servers” are on each physical piece of hardware, but I’m sure the separation is part of the need to keep them.

Obviously if they got rid of them people wouldnt pay for transfers, as others have mentioned.

Oh snap, you are on the superior realm.

Idk friend, I’m on GMT+2 time and was surprised to see Moon Guard still so lively. Granted I now have to begin finding a good guild now that I’m simi-geared, my opinion could very well change after searching.

Still has a good RP community though.

More like the community will have a Sylvanas fit when they find out all their names have been taken away by people who logged in early and now they’ve lost their identity.

The point of realms is to be conquered by Shao Kahn!

Wait… Wrong game…

What if they tie characters to our battle.net account and our character names are just aliases.

Each realm is handled by a separate server (or servers), in different locations.
If you choose one that is geographically closer to you, you get better pings.

If they merged them, then there would be fewer pieces of hardware (servers) trying to handle the load. Hardware capacity is the issue here.

And, if they merged some, many players would have to change their character names as there cannot be duplicate names on the same realm.

A fair number of people doesn’t make an actual server community.

Server communities were shattered when CRZ and all this cross realm play were implemented. Guilds are near meaningless anymore unless you’re a progression mythic raider, the damning of guilds slaughtered server communities.
