There’s a lot of ground mounts that I find aesthetically pleasing.
But honestly, there’s nothing quite as useless as a ground mount.
(Not counting the ones with vendors!)
A flying mount can do anything a ground mount can do and much more.
Like, I got the Jelly Cat mount and I love it so much, but I can’t justify using it for practical purposes because my floating demon horse outperforms the jelly cat in every way.
I suppose I could use it in places that are ground-only and don’t have any seamless transitions to flight enabled places, like BGs, where all the possible advantages of a flying mount are null and void, nerfing the Demon Horse to the Jelly Cat’s level.
But honestly, I think what we need is some reason to use ground mounts instead of flying mounts.
Maybe there could be two slots of Mount Equipment, one for ground mounts and one for flying mounts, so you could use two different types of equipment by switching between them or something.
Or just give us some fairy dust to make non-flying mounts fly…

Personally hoping for ‘dynamic flight’ but for ground mounts. Like, give em top speed 2x what flying mounts can do with the obvious downside of being ground stuck. Throw in a few jumping abilities, or maybe some wall climbing abilities depending the mount, and make the top speed a ramping ability. Like, you gotta keep going in a mostly straight line to build up to top speed but faster you are the harder it is to stop/turn.
At least, something akin to that.

I think they should just grant flying level at 20 instead of 30, most flying mounts go on ground anyway but I guess its there for legacy reasons as they cannot and probably won’t change it without an Engine overhaul. Ie WOW 2.0 which will never happen in our lifetimes.
After several expansions of pathfinder, I don’t really want a reason to stay on the ground for an extended period of time.
( But out of tradition, I do switch to ground mounts in Darkmoon Fair or other old flightless islands rather than run on a flying mount )
I’m not a fan of any of the dynamic-riding-like systems they’ve tried so far, but then again, I wasn’t for any of the flying systems either before Dragonflight.

Lol if you PvP, there’s no point in flying mounts.
Pretty much ground-only mounts matter.

If you do instanced PvP, ground mounts are exactly the same as flying mounts.
In a BG, my flying horse is exactly the same as a regular horse, but outside the BG my flying horse is much better than a regular horse, so why would I ever keybind a regular horse?
That’s kinda my point.
There’s absolutely no situation where using ground mounts is objectively better than flying mounts.
At best, ground mounts can be “just as good” as flying mounts in some niche situations where all the advantages of flying mounts are stripped away.
But you never see a situation that makes you go “I should probably switch to a ground mount now because it’s better”.

I always thought of them as transitional based on player progress:
No Mount ----> Ground Mount ----> Flying Mount.

The thing is: Even if you think of it that way, it still breaks at the seams.
As a lowbie, I use flying mounts. They won’t fly, but they will spare me the trouble of changing mount keybind at level 30 lol
And not only that, we also keep getting ground mounts as rewards for max level content, which implies Blizzard sees ground mounts as a thing for max level characters too.

I beg to differ my Magic Rooster Egg is one of the best ground mounts in this game…I am quite proud as a owner of said Rooster now…and when grounded I use it all the time…my fav flying mount is the Love Rocket.

Yeah, I tend to do the same thing.
That does seem rather inane. A reflection of Wow’s attitude toward flying?

This was the way it use to be when WoW came out you ran for 40 levels using your feet…at level 40 you could get your first ground mount then at lvl 60 you could get a bit faster land mount…Flying didn’t come till TBC and you had to be level 70 or if a Druid lvl 68 to get flying.
About near the end of Lich King they changed lvl for first ground mount too 30…the later on 20…flying later on went too lvl 60…
Lich King we couldn’t fly till lvl 78…and till MoP end you could get your flying mount at max 't level of the game …h
Then came Path Finder the made up function of a certain Dev to keep us grounded as they didn’t like flying…and now we have Dragon flying introduced by that said dev that doesn’t like flying…go figure.

The game was originally designed without flying in mind. When they added flying, then dynamic flight, it’s not like they could just scrap the ground mounts completely. What a silly question.
But if non-flight is just a vestigial part of WoW’s design past, why do they keep adding new ground mounts?
Is it silly to expect a brand new mount reward to be useful?

It’s silly to not realize it’s not all about you. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean some of the other 7 million subs don’t. There are parts of the game where you can’t fly. Leveling alts might prefer ground mounts for aesthetics, flying mounts with wings look weird running on the ground. Then there’s the rp purposes.

This was during late TBC. I use it as a rough judge of when I first played because I know it happened during my first 4-month stint of playing the game.
