Maybe it’s just the server I’m on or the guilds I’ve joined, but I have no idea why guilds are pushing members to join discord so hard when none of said guilds have actually used their discord or are largely inactive in them.
I get their usefulness for dungeons and raids with your guildies, but the few guilds I’ve joined almost never played together and didn’t talk in the discord either so… I dunno what the point is, really. Anybody else run into this?
Friends and I use discord to keep in touch. Many people I know don’t play WoW anymore, but we are still friends and keep in touch through discord. It’s an easy way to chat without being restricted to being in or on warcraft. Heck my wife uses discord to message me while she’s working.

Sounds more like bad guilds than an issue with discord. Both my classic guild and retail guild use it constantly

24hr VC calls with some very awesome people.
Basically a guild’s Facebook page with voice comms… it’s an awesome tool.

it’s a tool. like any tool, its value is in how it’s used. putting a bunch of antisocial people in a discord isn’t going to make them start chatting! but with a group of folks who can keep it going, it can be a fun and even useful place.
It’s a more convenient place to store information than the GMOTD.

It comes down to the leadership and the people coming in. It starts with getting everyone socialized with movie nights and jackbox during maint, and then you all just vibe

I don’t have to be logged into WoW to talk to my guild on Discord.

You can also look up big discords in the search function, OP. I’m in the main path of exile one and it’s very active. easy to talk to like-minded folks. There are discords for every class in wow, in addition to general hubs for conversation.
It’s a versatile place to chat and meet people beyond just guild usage.
I don’t see the point in forcing people to use it outside dungeons/raids/pvp.
It is really nice when people like to hang out in Discord though, on the rare occasion where I feel like being social – it’s nice having guildies to vibe with.
Bro don’t even get me started… I made a whole thread about Discord on a different toon and to this day I don’t get how it’s become so ingrained into wow. I use it strictly to voice chat in raids. Same as vent back in the day. Hate the whole Discord culture and how everyone just shoves their Discord in your face. It’s some get z bs

haha i can totally get this, sometimes it feels like people are trying to get you to sell your soul and all of your free time just to join their guild like, bruh. When I log off, I’m done for the day. I get the social aspect of wanting to spend time with friends outside of the game, but… someone I just met ten minutes ago isn’t my friend. xD

Good, reliable, free, convenient?
I feel spoiled by Discord after years of Vent, Mumble, Teamspeak, Skype, etc.

I do agree with this, it’s been a boon for being able to house lots of roleplaying stuff with some older friends. Not a big fan of joining them just for the sake of joining one, though, I think is what I’m getting at.
It’s really not that complicated, you’re over thinking it.
- allows you to chat 24/7
- cross-game functionality, can play many games with the same people
- Top tier voice quality
- empowers you to find communities that are into what you are into
- it’s literally free to use
You don’t need to use it if you don’t want to. Like all tools though, if they improve your game play, people doing higher level content generally will prefer you to use it.
Are you also against group texts on phones and skype? I don’t get the hate.
My main issue is that Discord doesn’t feel like a tool, with how heavily it’s pushed it just feels like it’s own community at this point. Why would I log onto Discord to socialize? Isn’t that why I pay $15 a month to Blizzard for? To log onto an MMO, play and socialize?
I swear I really hate the Discord culture, especially when people, redirect you to discords when you wanna socialize in-game. Guess I’m old and outdated eh

people still use skype…?!
Microsoft really drove that platform into the ground via lack of innovation eh? Skype was synonymous with online chatting for so long.
