Death shadow is suposed to be necrotic/decay? is it different from void shadow energy?
Void Shadow magics is black/umbral/purple/Dark navy blue and negation aka entropy, Shadowlands magic aka death magic is necrotic it rots it causes things to age and collapse. Think of the Azure Span gnolls or the Scourge magics which death knights use which is green and dark blue, and purple maybe closer to cyan and sanguine red like in Ravendreth.
They are not the same in any stance?
Warlock shadow bolt is from the void or death?
They can be fused together like fel and void or necro magics. Legion Warlocks usually fuse Shadow (void) magic with fel and master those with volatile fire magics. Magic fusion between opposing or different cosmic forces can end very badly so they’re not recommended. Though often the most dangerous spells are a combination of such things. Remember the universe was created when Light encountered Void thus creating the cosmos and in the location where both forces met chaos magics was born aka Fel and the Twisting Nether was born.
In any ideal universe, the idea that “Life is Light, Light is Life” in the metaphysics of WoW wuould be extended to “Death is Shadow, Shadow is Death” but *vague gestures at Blizzard competency track record regarding clever, consistent worldbuilding that gives depth and nuance *
I see shadow as the opposite of light and death/decay as the opposite of life/nature
I was never a fan of the “Void Shadow” or the “Death Shadow.” I liked the idea that Shadow Priests and Affliction locks used some other kind of dark magic that was just called “Shadow.”
Legion made Shadow Priests solidly Cthulhu-esque Old God Priests, but the Shadow Powers of Affliciton seem to have some mystery, still. Not exactly entirely of the Void or Death.
I liked the idea of the Shadow being something more vague and sinister. I guess no matter how it gets further defined, it looses its mystery.
I’m 100% against mistery… wow has “mistery” enough, sylvanas and jailer traumatized me, broke any limit about “mysteries”.
Just make all powers fighting for control and its enough
Before Chronicles, there was no hard difference between different types of Shadow magic. Now, apparently, DK’s use Death magic, while Shadow Priests, Warlocks, Sub Rogues, and anyone else I’ve missed, uses Void, I guess
Affliction plays on Void aesthetics though Gul’dan used “shadow magics” to raise Teron Gorefiend. It’s a shame warlocks don’t have more options on what types of magics they are using, but we can sum it up as shadow (void) magics that can also raise the dead, which we’ve seen in the past with Shadowmoon necromancy which is based on Void magics… not death. (strictly) Then we have the Margrave’s comments to Calia which confuses everything for those who don’t understand how the cosmic forces work.
That’s literally what I just said
Void Shadow gets invited to the cooler clubs.
Death Shadow is strictly the grunge scene.
I would not take damage types on world as strictly things that exist.
To me, Shadow magic should be taken as a shorthand for "Magic that most people would consider immortal or taboo. "
Now that you mention that, I think I remember something. Was necromancy referred to as “shadow magic” in the past?
Chronicles came in and decided that only void shadow existed now and all the other stuff either didn’t exist or was now part of the Jailer’s grand plot of nonsense.
At this point we really don’t know where the Draenei Auchenai fit in for example. They were death shadow priests up until the Chronicles made all shadow priests the insane old god worshiping types. So now we have no real idea of what the Auchenai are. Are they priests? Are they necromancers? How does it work?
Stop spreading titan propaganda. Sargeras did nothing wrong.
So this is completely speculation because it’s kind of vague, but I think shadow is not necessarily any cosmic force but instead a “form” of magic. When I say form I refer to things like fire and frost as examples. Arcane fire, elemental fire, fel fire, holy fire, etc etc. all of these types of magic can produce fire. I view “shadow magic” as much the same. It can be produced by void or death or fel or hell even arcane shadow was an older concept. What exactly the specific differences of these shadow magics are who knows, but they all seem at least a little bit necrotic and mind altering.

thanks to you i’m definitely more confused now than before lol
basically all powers has power rangers potential
While there’s been no hard line presented between them, for a while now I’ve tentatively speculated that Shadow magic could amount to drawing upon the darkness/void that naturally exists in physical reality, while Void magic could be more explicitly conjuring darkness/void from the Void itself that exists as the distinct cosmic plane outside our own.
Hence why one can have warlocks, death knights, shadowmages, etc. using Shadow magic without the pitfalls of attracting the whispers of the Void and going insane, while channeling the power of the Old Gods or Void directly means courting their madness and subjecting oneself and one’s surroundings to their corruption.
One “belongs” in the physical universe and operates within its rules, while the other doesn’t and compromises it.
