I know that the official release date of Shadowland is october 27 . But the prepatch thing is gonna be released earlier than official launch date. What exactly is the prepatch and what is the difference between them?
Pre-patch event, and a month to test out class changes and update addons.
It adds all the changes to the game that you would see as a player who has not entered shadowlands yet. So like the new levelling and class changes.
It will also add a questline that is limited for the prepatch period and then goes away forever
The Pre-Patch will bring many of the changes, but NOT the new content.
- Corruption will go away.
- Class changes will appear, so all the talents and ability changes will replace what we currently have.
- Many of the new features of the new expansion will be available, like the customization/cosmetic options at the barber shop.
What will NOT be in pre-patch is any of the questing or new zone content from Shadowlands. That will be reserved for launch.
Pre-patch will come with a questline and a story to segue between BfA and Shadowlands, and it will allow us time to play with the new class abilities/get used to losing corruptions and essences, etc.

The prepatch includes a limited time event to transition us into the story and any changes to classes. In this case it also includes the level squish and everything that goes with that. Shadowlands launch is when the actual expac is playable.

Blizzard won’t tell us when one comes out is the difference.
