What's the deal with people not reading their chat?

I’ve been marathoning keys today in pug groups and I can’t tell you how annoying it’s been saying something in chat and it just never being acknowledged, and then the thing I was saying leading to a wipe or some kind of adversity. It’s not just a case of not seeing one message too, it’s people doing the whole key without any response to the things said in their caht. Why don’t people read their chats?

Because they don’t have them turned on.

That’s an insane way to play a multiplayer game. Not many things make me say this but if your chat is just turned off completely, uninstall.

Ask em why in group or say or whisper.

Or all of the above.

There’re probably players who just have chat completely disabled. Blizz even points out how to do this in one of their own new player guides. Seems like a bad idea for group content IMO, but then again being able to see chat is also a bad idea a lot of the time. :dracthyr_crylaugh:

What is there to say, most of the time? Not to be one of those “I’m not here to make FRIENDS” people from reality shows, but in the scant situations where I find myself in queues with randos I’m not there to socialize. I just want to get through the content. If someone explains how to do something, I do it, it’s not a discussion opener.

If there IS a situation where something actually needs to be said, I’ll hop in then. Like, should we go this way or this way? Or who wants to take this mechanic, when I know what to do. Otherwise, though, I’m where “Hey guys!” and “Thanks everyone!” goes to die.

Fear of being removed from the dungeon if they say the wrong thing, would be my guess. Getting that penalty.

I should be clear that I am referring specifically to keys. I wouldn’t dream of saying a word in queued content unless it was specifically with the goal of being toxic.

Me too I’m simply talking about when I’m talking strategy.

I used to PvP in battlegrounds with the chat turned off, especially on weekends when all the commander kids showed up. Made the game so much less annoying.

If I didn’t see what someone was saying in chat, it is likely because I am too busy doing the fight mechanics. /say or /party chat is better for me if someone insists on having everyone see what they are saying, depending on how far players are from one another.

If you dont have chat enabled, then you shouldn’t be playing this game. You can cancel me for that, i don’t care. Its just my opinion. Go ahead and cancel me.

While I doubt this is a high percentage of players, there ARE children who play this game.

Kids whose parents play and get their kid into it too.

But the kid is 12 and people assume everyone is 35 in chat so they turn the chat off for their kid so they aren’t traumatized by idiots.

Someone just the other day posted a story about how someone got kicked for not responding to chat (in trivial content where everything was going fine) and then shortly after the kid’s mom whispered him to ask what happened (because he had whispered the guy after they got kicked).

A 12 year old shouldn’t be doing keys, then.

Not to be the problem child here, but who made you the leader of who can or can’t play?
Your lane…
How about you stay there and just play with people who DO have chat enabled? Easy enough to ask them, isn’t it?
I know, I know “I shouldn’t have to ask”
Yeah, actually you should if it’s a priority to you. My chat is on if I’m in a group and also Main and Local Defense, which I only turn off if idiots are spamming it.
It ain’t all about me, it ain’t all about you. Don’t try to make it that way maybe?

I can understand having general and trade turned off, as these tend to be the worst channels for actual toxicity and general mind numbingly bad political and or personal takes, but I keep other channels open for things like /say and /shout just cause it’s useful for communication.

If you have literally everything turned off and you’re ignoring everyone in an instance trying to communicate in earnest, then at that point YOU, not them, are the problem. You’re griefing other people and being a disruption by not following the mechanics and not letting them help you with the mechanics if they have helpful tips.

Because you DO have alternatives to having raid/group chat off if it’s cause of bad experiences, the ignore button not only ignores said player, but it will black list that character from ever being put in a group with you as well.

In my opinion you don’t get to tell me how to play my game.
Go ahead, cancel me.

You think i care? About getting canceled over an opinion that simple? I don’t. Cancel me all you want. I don’t care.

It is downright bizarre how the chat isn’t legible by default.

When Xbox Live was first released it was important that it came with a microphone out of the box so that voice chat wasn’t some obscure peripheral that never got used.

In WoW you have to manually configure the chat box to show you what people say instead of cluttering it with useless info.

This is an absolute failure of UI design.

Stop begging for attention. Only important or influential people get cancelled.

Blizz trained players not to bother reading their chat.

It’s constantly flooded with repetitive NPC roleplay.
