I sometimes see the most unique names, and am curious how people came up with them.
Was it a name you just used the random generator, or after a special character you enjoy, or do you have a special story to go with it? How did you come up with your name, and do you have a reason for it?
Mine is real simple, is just a nickname given by my father, but I’ve enjoyed making a little story how she was lost in a storm, being saved by her parents who put her in an apple barrel off a sinking ship. She was found by a fisherman, who gave her the name.
Mine’s a comination of Gar, from Arcanum, and the big bad from Final Fantasy 1. I wanted that Gar- part of the name, very orc-y. I also had originally intended on being a hunter so the name’s also nature-y. I also couldn’t come up with anything better that wasn’t already taken, had to go with an old french spelling of the word just to use the name I wanted.
Sometimes when I do the theater troupe event I get turned into an Earthen lady, I have made note that it is a very fitting name/race combo.
Sen’s name was five name changes before I was happy with it. LOL
I don’t know where it came from. I just kinda thought it up.
Thallia’s name was not, in fact, from mythology or Percy Jackson, like so many assumed. I honestly didn’t even know either of those were a thing when I came up with her name. She was the twin sister of Thalassar, my bf’s character, and so when we created them, Thallia seemed to be a good name for a twin based off of his character’s name.
Destrien’s name is from my Jedi Knight in SWTOR. I borrowed a few names from my characters there.
Azryl… I dunno. It just kinda came into existence.
Endred’s name is homage to a friend I used to raid and RP with back in BC.
So that’s guild lead and my four “main” characters. I have too many others outside of that. And none of them have interesting origins. Just creative names I came up with.
I love that, and it shows how much thought is put into names! I wish I was as talented, but sometimes they are really hard for me.
For the record, I will click on the chest in the theater troupe until I get male simply because I enjoy their dance. I like your reason much better!
I admit, I think of her name no matter what toon you are on. Or Rhielle [sorry if I mispelled, bit on tired side]. But I get changing names until you are happy…they are such an important part, and help you give your character their groove.
Btw apple has a twin sister as well [on the horde]…I’d giggle so much if people guessed her name.
I chose this name because of how smoothly it rolls off the tongue.
Honestly though, I have a terrible name and it’s awkward to say. Which is why I chose it. It’s funny hearing people cringe while pronouncing it.
Your name is too innocent and cute sounding and reeks of untrustworthiness…almost a scammy name. Type of name you get unwanted whispers from that quickly turn down strange lane.
only thing I may have done different with your name is I tend to think of hellabert, like that’s hella bert…amirigtht?
GASP Actually I’ve had people fly across the city when I’m playing music [it shows me on map] just to tell me how much they love my name. Thankfully I’ve never received anything negative, but perhaps those keep it to themselves.
I like it regardless, from now on I’m going to think of it hella cool.
Oh, I didn’t think you were! I understand life sometimes deals us cards that give us trust issues. But if it makes you feel better, I hate apples and any you have are safe.
Most of my names come from just mashing sounds together until I’ve got an arrangement that feels like a good vibe for them, particularly trying to incorporate common sounds from their in-game naming conventions or the real world cultures many in-game races are based on. A few standouts:
Lokka, orc shaman: Derived from “lok’tar.” Since this is orcish for “victory,” I tend to think this makes it the orcish equivalent of “Victoria.”
Tarashi, orc hunter: Meant to be Lokka’s counterpart, thereby taking the back half of the source phrase.
Rohkaka, troll warrior: Derived from the trollish words “rohk,” meaning “apocalypse,” and the suffix “-aka,” meaning “daughter of.” She was rolled to dual wield the troll greatswords, Jin’rohk and Zin’rohk (if the latter ever becomes available to acquire again beyond a BC PvP recolor ).
Doebe, tauren paladin: Derived from “adobe,” the sun-baked earthen bricks used by indigenous American peoples for building durable, long-standing settlements in the American southwest.
Corinthia, draenei paladin: Derived from Corinth, the Greek city, and Corinthians, the biblical story.
Soroko, draenei shaman: Deliberate misspelling of “sirocco,” a type of wind.
Hekatia, draenei mage: Derived from Hekate, the Greek goddess of magic.
Carnagi, gnome death knight: Portmanteau of the Carnegie museum, and carnage.
Frizzette, gnome hunter: Derived from “frizzen,” a part of the firing mechanism on a flintlock firearm.
Assette, goblin priest: Slapped a feminine naming suffix on the beloved goblin word, “asset.”
Farissa, undead priest: Rare case of a direct naming reference to another character, Faris, from Final Fantasy V. I really have no idea why I chose to reference that character with an undead priest, as they had absolutely nothing in common.
Drank a few strong IPAs during Remix and wanted to make an Orc warrior and Gromgaar sounded like a good Orc name (I am sure there is probably an NPC Orc with that name, but I did not know at the time).
I grabbed this name for a kul tiran that was going to be named after a variation of Santa Claus (In italian)…but after they nerfed Kul Tirans to the ground in PTR, it has been a lot of things
