Consistency: The story of WoW is wildly inconsistent with Retcons happening every other month.
Good payoff: N’zoth has been teased for years and… what he’s gone in a patch?
Sylvanas is fully exposed as being the villain, now between two whole armies who are against her and she just… flies away?
Teldrassil is burned and Tyrande fights for her life to take back… one area. Great vengeance.
Good pacing: Teldrassil was burned, UC was destroyed, Azshara was defeated, N’Zoth was defeated, Sylvanas was run off all in the course of one expansion. That’s WAY too fast. They’re just breezing through the story when they could do so much more.
Not reusing cheap tricks: Many people didn’t like how Garrosh was handled and him turning into a genocidal maniac was not enjoyable. Sure some people liked the whole “Orc only” Horde but others didn’t. So what does Blizz do? Make an even worse splitting story with Sylvanas being evil and the Horde just going along with it (which even less people liked) and not even any sort of good raid to conclude it. Just… an infuriating cutscene of the bad guy getting away.
Edit: Forgot to mention the whole transmedia storytelling. Having us figure out the story in between expansions through books and comics is not good. Books and comics should be used to enhance the world and build on it a little more. I shouldn’t have to go completely out of my way to figure out what the hell happened to characters.
We basically want a return to Legion writing which was consistent, engaging and mostly logical. Might not have been absolutely perfect but it was definitely a high point.
A good storytelling shouldn’t need external sources to tell a story. In other words, if you want to know the story inside a game, you shouldn’t have to buy a book to understand what’s going on…
Agreed. That story pulled my heartstrings quite a bit, and all the way through. It wasn’t even just the big bombastic bits either, but the little bits where your character is self reflecting on their situation as well. It leaves you with a lot to think about by the end when you realise that you are not so different from your enemy. It was brilliantly done.
