What'm I doing wrong in M+?

It seems to be a recurring issue that I’m dying frequently in M+. Not just to mechanics that’re supposed to be avoided, I totally get when that happens, but even just to damage that’s supposed to be ‘passive’ I’ll find myself going down while the rest of the group is at or near full health.

This happens too often for me to try pointing fingers at someone else, so I must be messing something up somehow. I’ve got defensives that I use, but it seems like that just delays the inevitable and as soon as I run out of buttons to push I end up on the ground regardless. What could I be unintentionally doing that’s making it so hard for me to stay alive?

Again, I expect to die when I inadvertently put the blinders on and miss a ‘move out of this’ mechanic for 130% of my health bar, but it’s pretty disheartening when even passive stuff like trash AoE or DoTs end up killing me when the rest of the group seems to be unfazed by them. :sob: So what could be my problem here?

  • Positioning
    • As a caster you should almost always be away from the tank.
    • Don’t stand directly in front of any mobs because of cleaves, but you can go ahead of the dungeon if it’s safe so you don’t have to chase down the tank for the next pull.
    • There are also a decent amount of AoE dot mechanics so even when standing at range, you should be 5-8 yds apart.

  • Defensives
    • You should be using your defensives liberally.
      • It’s very important to use your defensives when you are still high HP and you know a certain mechanic is coming. If you use it when you are low HP then you are doing it too late.

  • Consumables
    • You should have a stack of Health potions

  • Toolkit
    • Use your Mass Dispel, Regular Dispel, and Interrupts.

  • Check your Graphics Settings
    • You need to set Particle Density as high as you can to see ground effects more clearly.

It’s probably casters targetting random people, especially the webmages in spider dungeons. They chain cast web bolt and even if/when you interrupt them, they’ll go back to casting once the CD is over. The rest of the party either needs to keep interrupting the mob(s) or nuke them quickly. Easier said than done if there’s more than one in a pack amongst other mobs and you’re in a PuG.

There’s also a lot of very unforgiving AoE you need to mitigate with defensives. Those mobs needs to die ASAP or they’ll wipe the group.

Are you timing your defensives right? If yes, you’re dying to unavoidable damage because your dps couldn’t kill the mob that caused said damage in time. There’s nothing you can do about it.

At high keys, it is very common that inexperienced people dies because they didn’t time their defensives right.

If I were you, I would find a m+ guild that will work with you and help you learn more. They will be able to watch what you are doing and give you pointers while in the dungeon.

  1. Enchant your gear.
  2. Get higher item level gear with more stam
  3. Get gems.

Once those things are done you have done everything you can do to ensure your gear is as covered as it can be.

After that get better at using defensives, health pots, and warlock cookies.

Which abilities?

Plenty of trash with abilities more deadly than bosses. That second spider miniboss before first boss in Arakara just 1-shots the entire group if they don’t wall the screech. :dracthyr_blob_dance_animated: Shouty fatmans in Siege also insta kill you.

Just gotta learn what the mobs do. Lots of stuff can be cc’d, kicked, lined or dispelled.

Look at your guild name, what did you expect?

Have you tried wearing a blue or yellow starfleet shirt instead?

It could be random casts getting off because no one is kicking. Or not enough people using aoe stops like a shockwave or leg sweep

haha, I didn’t see that. A nod to good ole Star Trek: TOS. lol

Maybe the most valid reply so far tbh. :dracthyr_lulmao:

But yeah, defensive use is probably the biggest thing that I can personally work on. Using them at all is one thing, but using them correctly is something that I’m probably not doing.

Aside from that, maybe it’s just pugs doing pug stuff and the chaotic lack of coordination that usually comes with? Like the beginning of Mists is one of the most terrifying times for me because it seems like every time I run it, I’m dead at least once if not twice before the first boss due to Spirit Bolts, Overgrow, and the stomper guys. How much of that might be my fault?

Maybe at the end of it all I’m just not cut out for high level stuff and should stay in my delve kiddie pool?

Going through some of your recent logs very quickly while I’m at work:

9 ara kara, you died shortly after the healer did to multiple damage sources. Both web bolts and revolting volleys going off left and right. This is a group issue, not a personal issue. Web bolts can get through (it’s not ideal, but not a wipe by itself) but revolting volley absolutely can’t go off.

9 dawnbreaker, you died to the spider boss orb. no judgement, it happens

if you can post logs of more of your runs where you’re having this issue, i can try to give more specific feedback. but oddly enough, the public logs don’t seem to be ones where you died much.

spirit bolts need to be kicked. as a shadow priest you can’t help much here, so you have to rely on your group.

save dispersion for overgrow and make sure you’re close to the pack so you can be broken out with cleave.

Stop standing in the fire; that’s a start.

as you are moving into higher keys, m+ becomes much more unforgiving.

i dont know much about Spriest, but review your talents. are there more defensives you could take? increase your self heals and/or shielding?

others have noted your vers. while a lot of guides will tell you to optimize other stats to maximize your DPS, vers improves everything: more dps, more health, more defensiveness. all of this is super important in m+.

raid stats and m+ stats are not the same.

also, do you have food, flask and weapon oils, plus lots of health pots?

another thing to consider:

are you looking too much at your action bars for your rotation and not looking at the game play?

I know when I heal, I can get lost in the raid frames, but it can be easy for dps to tunnel vision their action bars to run their rotation.

I’ve never been a logger unfortunately. That probably kneecaps any attempt to analyze beyond the surface level though, huh? Honestly I’m too embarrassed to even look at the ones that’re available because I probably won’t like what I see.

Thanks for the tips though! I’m definitely still lacking in knowledge of specifics for each dungeon which sounds like a big factor in knowing when to focus on survival and where DPS should be focused on single targets rather than just firing AoE indiscriminately into a huge trash pull.

general tips: use fade frequently. there’s also a talent that gives your flash heal targets a DR for a few seconds after using flash heal – you can use this before big incoming damage even if you don’t need the healing, just for the DR buff.

Not sure how much this is still an issue but if you’re trying to squeeze FPS out of an older system some of the graphic settings will inexplicably cull very important “get out of fire” effects.

Projected textures was the main culprit IIRC.

Another thing to look for is a poison / curse effect. Default UI is pretty bad at showing these. Got used to running Healbot even on DPS specs to know when there’s a curse or poison on me.

even though you don’t log, others do. your profile actually looks pretty solid mid-tier overall.

i just looked at my tank (this toon - kontiki). I might either being playing too defensively or I need to pull bigger - or both.
