Right now the NEW Classic Progression realms; specifically Nightslayer server is the most populated by far. Its likely the most populated WoW server on earth at this point.
If you’re seeking a “Vanilla WoW” experience however this is not the place to be; for that I do think you should consider Classic Era. If you want a world PVP server and this means you do get ganked, then Whitmane is BiS. If you want a PVE server where you have the option to be ganked in world, then Pagle is BiS.
Both Whitemane and Pagle offer a far more chill and enjoyable culture.

I don’t recall using RMT to buy raid drops in vanilla.

FYI Cezar I agree with your post overall, but after seeing this guys previous posts this is probably a bait thread of some sort.
He was really hating on fresh and Era on the SoD forum and also doing that thing that about 75% of the forum posters sadly do where there was no discussion to be had, it was just about trolling/arguing and being right.
Your reply is good for lurkers though.

Whitemane and Pagle do not have an RMT problem. There are very few gold bots and gold buyers on WMC because we torment them when they’re detected, then we report them and they get banned.
The RMT issues however do exist on SoD, Retail, Cataclysm, Nightslayer & dreamscythe

Nobody does. Because it didn’t happen. Lots of wrath babies think it was the norm though, because people were doing it when they started playing.

I don’t agree with this characterization. There is a full-throated GDKP guild on Pagle that encourages gold buying. They celebrate the “whales” when GDKP pots are driven up and they reminisce about gold buyers past now that things have calmed down.

Not this way on Whitemane; we shun gold buyers, murder their infested raids, and slay the bots when detected.

Well that’s two questions.
At the moment Anniversary is the most populated simply because it’s fresh, who knows how long that will last. Before that Cata Classic and SoD were the most populated.
As for what you should play that depends on what you want.
Anniversary is vanilla with some minor but very nice QoL improvements, it’s obviously fresh and will eventually progress to TBC and probably on.
Classic era is static #nochanges vanilla so if that’s what you want go there, the realms are established but they’ll be there forever.
Season of Discovery is vanilla with a lotta changes and we don’t know what the long term plans are so if you want vanilla content with heavily modified classes have fun.
Cata is well Cataclysm classic, so if you want that and want to keep progressing through the expansions go there.
I actually suspect this is not true… I got on Cata before Fresh and Cata / SoD were flat dead… Meanwhile on Era it was killin it. Right now on Era its more busy than Cata a month ago…
Now before you bring up WCL data that’s used for IF.pro… I will have you know blizzard blocked WCL data from Era for some reason back in June or July so the data is incredibly old… some of us suspect blizzard is hiding something and does not want Era to become even more popular.
additionally most guilds and pugs do not public log let alone log data period. Lack of logs when I started here in 2021 was kinda surprising to me, but its just what is normal in this community outside of the most sweaty raids. Not even kidding you when I estimate maybe a % of 1% of the Era player base actually use WCL, the rest simply do not care or use Details. I have never seen anyone use Raider IO, but I suspect someone exists who does.
Era seems populated because they merged realms. Logging into it yeah it seems about as populated as a single Cata or SoD server.
Now that does mean you can get a perfectly decent experience at the moment on era since it’s not like you have to worry about dead realms or the realm you pick dying anytime soon.
This may be a surprise but Era is at a very low point in respect to population, but its already starting to pick back up. We will be crushing it again soon.
Warrior, rogues and hunters are overpopulated and everywhere. Play anything except those.
