What would a Necromancer class look like?

People keep asking for a Necromancer class in wow, but in all honesty, I am not interested in a class that simply fires bolts and raises skeletons like the ones in WC3…

Summoning blood golems and iron golems is where it’s at!!

just like an unholy DK i mean why would anuone want a class we already have in the game?

Kind of like an Unholy DeathKnight with a staff.

A death knight in robes. Seriously, unholy covers undead minions (necromancers would presumably get more than one) and disease spreading, frost covers the ice magic necromancers and liches are known for, and blood encompasses the manipulation of bodily fluids. I guess you could swap blood out for a Bone spec, but at what point do you just copy/paste the necromancer from D3 into WoW and call it good?

Let’s be honest though Unholy Death knights are irrelevant, as nobody plays that spec as Frost DKS are beter

It’d basically be a ranged unholy DK, which isn’t different enough to warrant a new class unfortunately. I think they should have had necromancers instead of death knights.

They’ve had purely melee classes every time a new one comes out, it’s getting dumb.

Check ESO in June… They just announced the Necromancer class for their next xpac

That comment is irrelevant, because this is a thread about speculating what kind of spells and specs a theoretical necromancer class would have, not the balance of it.

Something like this:

Glyph of the Necromancer
Class: Warlock
You summon undead creatures in place of your demons.

I imagine if Blizzard added a Necromancer class, it’d look a lot like Diablo 3 Necromancer.

a mix of both death knight and warlock. There armor class would be cloth, weapons would be staff, polearm, dagger, and one handed sword with a offhand. They would have mostly affliction spells and diseases, as well as shadow bolt and death coil (which can heal undead like DK’s used to do), along with summoning of warlock variant pets that would be Undead. In theory, they can also have a “tank” spec like the warlock Demonology and Hunter Beast Master spec in retrospec. But this is purely “ideal” with the warcraft “class identity”.

I’ve been playing around with Unholy and it’s similar but makes for a crappy Necromancer as the summon spells are on such long cooldowns.

A proper necromancer would be doing a whole lot more summoning like demonology does.

It can easily be made different. If it can be done for other classes, it can be done for Necromancer and Death Knight.

I was thinking a melee tank spec for a mail wearing necromancer could be based around summoning minions to do the damage, while the necromancer absorbs/mitigates the damage via a bone & sinew exoskeleton that is maintained via consuming the minions he raises as needed.
Add some other neat spells and such, and I’d certainly play it.

A ranged caster, could also be mail, that focuses on summoning minions like demonology, also casting spells to empower them or death and frost spells of his own.

Perhaps a top tier talent or power up for a lich form that buffs abilities. A talent form could be something like Shadowform for a priest. Maybe even with some sort of mechanic to survive death like a soul stone or the shaman ability.

A healing spec based around blood or death. Siphoning and bestowing health. Again working in the minions. Perhaps skeletal mages could be raised as an AoE healing spell where the minion is casting the healing spell in an area around it.

Maybe something like corpse explosion that drenches friendlies in blood that restores health. For something like a boss, it could be a blister that forms and ruptures.

The raising of minions and death magic needs to be core to any spec.

Cloth would be a fine armor option as well.
I kinda like the idea of both melee and ranged specs like a shaman, but not necessary if we could come up with good mechanics for a ranged tank.
Tank not necessary, just seemed like a neat idea.

UH DKs can already have more than one permanent minion via their All Will Serve talent.

  • Tons of more leach.

  • Multiple summons. Healing multiple summons at once.

  • Ability to reanimate nearly anything you kill.

  • Off healing like disc priest.

  • Cloth armor.

  • Golems.

They did it in diablo. Theres a fine example.

Not the same as warlock reanimating a corpse not using demons…

Dks use plate and swords and use 1 summon.

We need more casters.

I hate those comments where they say “durrr unholy death knights, why we need necros?”

Holy priests heal, yet we have paladins too that heal using the light. Derp.

Yeaaaah, it’s just that necromancy is generally frowned upon by everyone except the undead. Especially in the Alliance right now.

Sure they could ignore it, but tossing aside the “anything can happen” argument, I think reworking unholy to be a ranged class that raises corpses would be best.
