What will the best SSF Class/Professions be?

Curious about what people will try.

I was leaning towards one of the class/profession combinations where you can cover the vast majority of your power slots from your professions alone:

  • Feral Druid: Skinning / LW
  • Mage/Warlock/Priest: Tailoring / Enchanting
  • Warrior/Paladin: Mining/Blacksmithing

Other classes generally require different gathering professions to upgrade armor and weapons, respectively. Now some of the above might not be truly viable SSF due to requiring out-of-profession inputs for important recipes, and others might not need to get both weapons and armor from professions (e.g., hunter can probably make due with engineering). But this is where I’m starting before deeper research.

What are you thinking?

Generally speaking if you goal is survival the most powerful professions are going to be Engineering & Alchemy. However given this is self found you can’t use AH to get materials this essentially means herb/alch or Mine/eng

As for if you should go Alchemy or Engineering I think it’s more based on your class toolkit. I think classes that have an easier time getting out of sticky situations would be better served by the static buffs of alchemy. While ones that can’t reliably escape from a bad situation would benefit more from the utility of engineering.

It’s interesting that you’re exclusively looking at engineering and alchemy, as classes without AH options could also use professions to upgrade the general quality of gear.

They can however there are some issues

First off you mentioned Tailoring/Enchanting.

This is normally a very good combo but with SF you will forever be stuck with a runed copper rod as everything from Silver & up requires a blacksmith to make the rod for you to craft.

Tailoring standalone would not be taking advantage of the profession combo and the items produced by it won’t help any other crafting professions (also you can’t AH herbs/ore/leather so you could only vendor for some extra coin)

Skinning/leatherworking & mining/blacksmithing don’t have the same issues as tailor/enchanting but just seem weaker than the buffs alchemy/engineering provide you.

A lot of recipes for things like LW require stuff from other professions which you can’t get such as potions, you will also never be able to make cured rugged hides. Add to this the poor itemization of crafted gear, it’s just not as strong, when you compare it to gear you get from quests.

It’s just really can’t compete with engineering with all the tools it gives you as well as having fewer recipes which are not viable to being SF, and while it does require some leather, it’s only small amounts and that can be fished up. Alchemy is really the only close second in terms of pure utility.

Thank you for explaining.

I think herb/alch is easily the best. And warlock. Gonna go ironman.

Alchemy and Herbalism are my goto professions when I play Warrior or Paladin. The benefits from the potions far outweigh anything you will get from say Blacksmithing. I do usually level skinning/L. working first to make some armor kits, but once I get a stack or two, I go Alch/Herb and don’t look back. Also remember fishing is totally under rated.

Fishing is bae.

that’s a good tip with the armor kits. strategically dropping professions is a thing in SF.
