They’re both going to coexist. It’s the same $15 a month that goes to blizz so why even debate it.

Regardless, Blizzard still get money from those purely subscribed for Classic and Retail. So for them, keeping both alive is a no brainer. But due to the hype from the playerbase, I feel that classic design will likely influence some design decisions for retail going forward.
looks up
Is the sky falling again? It’s sunday. Sky usually falls on a sunday.
See, i just don’t wanna go backwards. I do believe the devs might finally start to listen if classic does well. Which im hopeful it does
Can only hope they do.

Nothing other than Blizzard getting their Q3 numbers
Classic will be super popular for a couple months, maybe a few years, but it will dwindle off where only hardcore classic fans stick around - which is totally fine.
There are a lot of players that play today that never played in classic, so they will jump on the bandwagon, but don’t have the nostalgia to keep them there.
Retail will always have the new, bright, and shiny content so it will always be popular.
Not what you think will happen.
If you expect Retail to get destroyed by Classic, that likely won’t happen.
A bunch of people will play Classic and love it, then unsub later when they’ve done EVERYTHING. (and they likely will have come BACK from being unsubbed, so the sub numbers will go UP from the release).
OR, People will switch from Retail to Classic, realize what Classic isn’t what they wanted to play and either return to Retail or quit altogether.
OR, they just won’t give a damn about Classic because they already realize what Classic IS and what it ISN’T.
I’ll be rolling a character in Classic for giggles, but I’ll probably barely play it because I already know Classic isn’t the golden pony people are trying to claim it is. I played Vanilla, I remember it well, and I know why Retail is better.
EDIT: The only thing that would REALLY pique my interest is if they go as far as a “Classic: Wrath” server. THEN I might play that a bit more. I really enjoyed Wrath, even though I hated the skill trees compared to what we have now.
I’ll personally be playing both in a casual capacity, though I might be tempted to raid in Classic if I run into a chill/flexible schedule guild.
As someone that played Vanilla from day 1 I’ll pass. BFA at it’s worst is still better than Vanilla in every aspect of gameplay.
And that is fine. But, having separate subs would allow actiblizz to see what the subscribers prefer.
It will change direction, or it won’t last too long.
Classic has it’s own audience, plus people sick of BFA’s nonsense will probably jump ship. One won’t harm the other, but Classic doing very well might compel the developers to make a return to form instead of pushing these garbage systems on us.
Blizzard can still see what subscribers prefer, and they themselves would probably prefer not to tell us.
Expect both the Classic and Live communities to claim they are bigger.
Of course they aren’t going to tell. Which is why they are keeping it under one sub, so they can claim wow is doing well, everybody loves BFA.
I present you with exhibit A, of “both the Live and Classic communities will claim they are bigger”
Source?
I’m not sure you grasp the concept of Classic. It is the antithesis of ‘new content’.
I really believe that current wow and classic appeal to completely different types of people. There will be crossover of course especially early on but by and large I don’t think they will even be competing for players.
I think there is a market for both and they can coexist without issue really.
I find it strange the bitterness towards one version or the other.
Classic players will be happy and BFA players will be happy, and they will both flame one another on their own forums without the other knowing.
On what? One sub allows you to play both. And i know of tons of people who won’t play classic when it releases
You have to have a retail sub to play classic. So that is the opposite of “direct competition.”
Classic will “steal” some players for the 2-3 months until they get to 60. Then they will be at 60, either in a guild that can raid with 40 people several nights, for five hours a night, or they will get bored and leave.
You’ll see tons of “Classic is really the best!” posts, while they level up.
You’ll see tons of “Classic is the worst! I’m 60, can’t get in a raiding guild/have the time to raid/whatever” posts, after they hit 60.
“Classic” is a game that “ends.” You’ll either not be able to raid, so it will end for you, or you’ll be in one of the few successful classic raiding guilds, where it will also eventually end. Even Blizzard’s forced “timegating” won’t keep people playing it forever.
