I would not say the quality of players, i would say the lack of players who care about broken classes, comps for free titles and wins.
Bragging rights last longer than gear.
Which is why I have had a philosophy of gold only for cosmetics.
Cosmetics, toys, mounts, etc all last forever; gear barely lasts a patch.

YAH except a patch in Shadowlands lasts about 6 months. So I would say gear is extremely important as well.

Then gear becomes less important, simply due to the fact that more time equals more ability to acquire the gear.
It doesn’t matter, in the end gear still has a shelf life and will always become dust in the bank, shard for an enchant, or straight gold from a vendor.
Tldr Cosmetics have uses forever, gear doesn’t
I agree somewhat. Problem is cosmetics wont help you get above average ratings BIS slot gear will. That’s just my opinion however.

I have never had trouble getting whatever rating was required of me to get the gear I needed.

I wouldn’t say 2400 is average, but it may be within the lower bound of a standard deviation
In my experience I’d say an average player is about 2500-2600, but really if you can’t make 2700 you’re just doing it wrong
but this is just according to the forums
1800 SL s1 was like 2100 any other expansion season

Dunno last season since i didnt rbg i was behind the entire s1. Having no gear and fighting 226 gate keepers between 1400-1600 really crushed the average imo. Hell i was stuck at 1600 
and usually being 2k on everything i play. But gear really mattered I imagine the same thing will happen.
