Just curious, so many seem to think Shadowlands as the best way to gear though PVP then ever before, so I want to compare it to MoP’s system and know why it was not as good.

Who thinks this? lol. They must have a short memory.
Shadowlands is better than Legion & BFA in some ways by sole virtue of having a gear vendor at all again, but it’s markedly inferior to both MoP & especially WoD (which just improved off MoP).
The reality is that Shadowlands’ system is a gargantuan grind with probably the biggest power disparity we’ve ever seen in the game, and we’re only in the first patch.

MoP’s PVP Resilience stat was much stronger than verse’s half-assed damage reduction that isn’t boosted by the set bonus. Before then, resilience also reduced crit chance and crit damage bonus.
We need one of these back or the offensive gap between honor and conquest gear will be too big. Right now it looks like devs only added pvp gear back then boosted its damage in pvp so pve gear wasn’t relevant. They didn’t actually balance anything

WoW designers don’t like “special pvp stats”.

Systemlands gearing is more similar toward WotLK. But there are pros and cons between systemlands and Wotlk if you compare them side by side.
For example while WotLK had resilience which is way better than versa. But systemlands actually has very generous entry level weapons for PVP while WotLK did not.

Oh, you liked the RNG gear acquisition of Legion, where we had no agency over our gear or templated stats?
SL is better than Legion in that it lessened said RNG (unfortunately there’s still Vault), and gave us the choice of what gear/stats to prioritize.
Legion’s templates obviously made for a much better alt experience compared to SL, but I would argue that even that was inferior to WoD.

The vendor was too hard to find.
On a serious note, PvP power just wasn’t a great idea. There are ways to ensure that most of the best PvP gear will come from PvP without tying a stat to every piece that’s 100% dead in all other forms of content. Yeah, you still want multiple sets of gear with vers now being king but you aren’t nearly as punished for bringing vers into PvE/open world as you were for bringing PvP power.
The carrot on a stick ended rather abruptly for unrated PvPers too. You were done honor gearing in a couple of days and had no way to progress without stepping into rated. That’s the opposite of a problem for some, especially those with multiple alts, but others didn’t love having nothing to do so early on unless they wanted to get sweaty.
Personally, I think that would have been fine if they just gave conquest for once daily BG wins like they do now.

Thats exactly how it is now though, in fact its even worse. You NEED rating to get better gear while back in MoP you only needed conquest.

Good point. I don’t like the rating gating but that may be because it doesn’t benefit me as a mostly unrated player.

I see, I was kind of confused by that at first. While that is its down side, I would say the pro outweighs the con in that the keystone spammer is not going to one shot the BG spammer.
As a rated player, I dont like it either. I could list off a number of reasons why or I could just…give Blizzards reasons.

We do not talk about legion PVP around these parts cough No vendorscough
old system:
- max lv
- random BGs
- Honor gear (you get ~3 pieces at the same speed of getting 1 197 gear in Shadowland)
- Enter Arena/RBG and farm Conquest
No Legendaries, no stupid neckless, no artifact. You log in and play whatever you like.
No PVPer forced to kill AI, no AI killer forced to enter RBG.
TL;DR: No bullsh!t
