During the cluster… happening… that was the Darkshore battle Malfurion managed to corner Sylvanas and was about to kill her when Saurfang interrupted him by chucking an axe into his back.
This did not immediately kill him, but he was left for dead, rapidly bleeding out and allowed the escape of Sylvanas.
As Saurfang debated whether to kill Malfurion quickly or not, the Player and Tyrande come across the scene and promptly beat Saurfang bloody, but do not kill him.
Tyrande needed to get Malfurion out so that She could staunch the near-mortal wound he had received, and knowing Saurfang’s history as an Honorable Orc and believing him to be in command of the Horde Forces, as well as knowing that overall command and control of the Kal’dorei forces has fallen apart and the battle was basically a rout knew that She could have little impact on the events in Darkshore. So she felt that saving Malfurion was the best option.
Saving Malfurion so that he could fight again, and rally their people to fight back in a guerrilla campaign and marshal their full might. (Wild Gods, Stone Giants, Chimera, etc. etc. All the stuff allied with the Night Elves but not present during the blitzkrieg.)
She did not expect Sylvanas to burn down the tree and her people, instead having expected Teldrassil to be occupied, possibly the people held hostage, but nobody but Sylvanas expected a genocide.

Nope, Battle of Lordaeron was the Alliance response to Teldrassil.

Sequence of Events:
Sword stabs planet, unleashes Azerite.
Goblins find Azerite and begin mining it.
Alliance finds out.
Horde Knows the Alliance knows.
Sylvanas comes up with a plan to end the “war” before it begins by tricking SI:7 into believing the Horde Army is going to Silithus to take the Azerite.
Night Elf Army begins move to Silithus to counter.
Horde Army changes direction and sacks Astranaar, pushing towards Darkshore and Teldrassil.
Malfurion creates wall of wisps to slow advance.
Night Elf reserves bolster lines.
Night Elf Army arrives and barely has time to get into position before wall of wisps is bypassed.
No longer needed to hold the wisps, Malfurion goes hunting for the Horde commanders.
Malfurion injured.
Night Elf army collapses and falls back in disorder to Teldrassil.
Horde besiege Teldrassil.
Sylvanas says “Burn it!”
Teldrassil burns.
Anduin immediately grabs ever able-bodied soldier and the entire Alliance fleet and lands at the Northern edge of Tirisfal.
Besieges Lordaeron.
Unknown number of Alliance soldiers die to plague.
Lordaeron rendered uninhabitable.
No longer holding a significant military advantage, Anduin/Sylvanas resign to a long drawn out grind of a war and begin seeking allies.

Malfurion had Sylvanas pretty well pinned down in Darkshore, then Saurfang showed up at the eleventh hour to save her, clocked him with an axe, and then lamented about how Sylvanas’ war was dishonorable.
He was later at the battle for Undercity, defending the inner sanctum.
She was with Anduin.
Who gave her a Hearthstone directly to him…

Why was Darkshore introduced later in the game then? Lord was like the opening cinematic of it
