I am struggling badly at picking a main, i keep making, deleting, and remaking characters thinking that will be the class i play the most. I would like to know what are all the steps were that you took in picking a main? Was it class fantasy? Class Playstyle? Specializations of the Class that got your attention? Or did you play all the classes and find out you main by what class you play the most?
Originally my main on a PvP server was a shadow priest. Talking vanilla here.
I wanted to main a shadow priest after seeing a forum thread asking how shadow priests are in PvP and all the replies were saying the same thing: “You will melt faces as a shadow priest in pvp.” That sold me the class and I mained it until end of TBC.
I loved how in vanilla I could take on any other class in PvP, back when many classes were rock paper scissors. Rogue? Warrior? Paladin? Mage? None of them were a problem for an undead shadow priest. Even other priests could be outplayed with mana burn.
Then I started leveling a feral druid. One of the things I liked to do on all my horde characters back then is go to Redridge at level 22 and spend a weekend or even a few weeks just PvPing against equal levels (actually this is still really fun in classic).
Feral druid at level 22 was the most fun I have ever had on any class doing this. Just the ability to run around faster than everyone else. And while leveling having access to track humanoids was so useful it felt almost like cheating.
I fell in love with feral druids, their speed, ability to shapeshift to tank and shift out to heal and generally chase down everyone or get away from everyone.
So from the end of TBC through today (with a break for most of Cata until just before WoD) I’ve played Feral.
There’s just something about the class fantasy and the playstyle that I love. Granted, shapeshifting into other forms is not as useful now as it was back then, but generally it’s still a thing you do. Plus I’m a panther!
Oh yeah and seeing the night elf druid in the original WoW cinematic also helped sell me on the class.
Playing anything else on an alt now feels so slow and limited. Sure they are fun too, but I always miss my druid if I’m doing battlegrounds on an alt.
My process? Just picking what I think is cool thematically and fun mechanically. For me that’s been Enhance for several expansions or more. I don’t decide around the meta since buffs and nerfs come and go. Leave that to the sweats imo.
Roll Monk !
Honestly just play whatever feels fun
You can have more than one main in PVP. That’s the fun of it!
Nothing, really? I just really love the idea of a gob with a gun. Even before the 11.1 MM changes I was rocking Lone Wolf for PvP which wasn’t the optimal style at the time.
In the past I was an SPriest and Fury War, like to say I was proficient at them. Just, y’know, whatever I have the most fun playing at the time.
I feel like your main picks you.
Another tip to find your main.
Delete all your character (you can restore once every 24 hours).
First one you restore is your main.
Its purely about enjoyment of design I think. So if you’re unsure dabble in everything. Don’t play fotm because it will often get nerfed.
Was an enhance shaman forever. Loved the tanky high damage bruiser/disruptor type play. Didn’t care about the theme that much. Warlock was second fav for similar style but ranged.
I’m a bit in limbo as I don’t love current design of enhance. Not sure why really. So I’m dabbling in stuff until I can figure it out.
Blizzard randomly rework classes through expansions where it feels like a different. I’ve used to be a big fan of old elemental shaman when they could cast lightning bolt on the move. Multiple rework later, Shaman isn’t the class I remember and I have a hard time getting back to it.
Reworks are always scary because they can push you from your current favorite class. Things like removing essence font from Monk that just added a nice flavor to it, where now I feel more like I’m just casting 2 spells and I don’t want to be forced into fistweaving.
Yup… I miss old mop demo warlock. It was my main for a bit lol… Reworks are definitely hit or miss!
My first ever PvE and PvP class was Hunter. In TBC I needed to heal so I went Druid. When RBG’s were introduced I was always the guy that would switch to Heal/DPS and eventually FC and I just stuck with that utility. That PvP utility rolled over to PvE utility as well. Druid Main since TBC but I am wanting to get into Paladin more. I am also “maining” Hunter for this season once again.
Play what you are comfortable playing. There isn’t a right answer, it is a personal preference. My only advice is to never pick a spec because it is perceived “meta”. You will do better playing the class/spec that you are most comfortable with than the one that is the current popular one.
Fury warr is easy win right now. Few buttons, obscene damage even as a non-ranged.
I’m still in the process honestly. Part of my issue is that I don’t like any class but only one spec from a class. Sometimes two if I’m lucky.
My issue is that I don’t want to play a class or spec that I don’t like thematically just for the better performance. But I’m also mostly just interested in BGs / wPvP and duels so my criteria is a bit skewed. Unfortunately the specs I want to main aren’t super good at the content I want to play.
So I go between classes / specs constantly without really settling on a main yet.
Pick a handful of class themes you like the most first and narrow things down from there. As well as which race you like and what options they have for classes available to them.
What spells and animations do you see in game that impress you.
I’d advise looking through each gear type (cloth, leather, mail, plate) and choosing which stuff generally looks the best to you. As well as looking at each class’s sets in the appearances tab in game.
As far as actual gameplay goes:
Do you want to tank, heal, or DPS? Only some classes can do all 3 roles, some can do 2 roles, and some only can DPS. Are you more interested in ranged or melee combat? Do you want a challenge, or do you want a simpler rotation? Do you like classes with a lot of control, or would you rather focus more on pumping throughput?
Just some questions that might help you decide, I hope.
Does it heal well and isn’t too complicated to play? I’ll play it. Playstyle and performance are key. Trying different classes to find one that suits you is always recommended. Most of us have experimented with multiple classes over time and swap mains from time to time.
I literally just picked something that looked cool!
I was watching the trailer for TBC one day which featured a draenei ret paladin wielding Hammer of Naaru. So I made the same thing!
That was in 2007 and the same character is still here today.
Well if you want a class that will be eternally overpowered no matter the patch.
1.mage
2.rogue
3.druid
And then if you value looking good and rp elements then i like to play dk it also gives you a lot of control over your own hp bar as compared to other classes.
I get what you mean, and sometimes it changes as well. Arguably Frost Mage is currently in it’s easiest iteration and one of its strongest, but I really don’t enjoy it as much as I used to.
WW Monk is strong, but I’m just not feeling it. Destro Lock & Shadow Priest are the least mobile casters but I’m really enjoying those right now.
