What was the point of layers again?

To handle larger load at launch right?

A lot of people, spawn more layers to hold them. No Queues.

So, why not spawn enough layers to handle the load?

I scream into a vast idiot void

Layers was about distributing player populations so zones weren’t as overloaded as they could be. It never had anything to do with overall server capacity or reducing queues.

I think those are called shards in retail.

The point of layers was to make you feel good, and act as a security cushion for some assh0le in Activision who really doesn’t understand what needs to be done, but is making decisions otherwise.
Did that answer your question?

True but they dropped the ball on layering regardless…I saw so many people in Valley of Trials in the first few minute or so after I zoned in it wasn’t funny

Correct! The original plan was for sharding the starting zones but this forum lost their damn minds over the word “shard”. So Blizzard changed it to continent-wide layering.

If you keep adding layers to allow for more players, you’ll keep getting players on that server…

This is a good thing if AND ONLY IF you plan on continuing to use layers. Since they plan on not using them for more than phase 1, they simply have to cap it at some point for when the layers are removed.

Tin foil helmet time.

I think we’re on the same servers as retail. “Layers” is just PR spin created when everyone freaked out about there being sharding.

Shards are per zone and dynamic.

Layers are per continent and (for the most part) static.

It’s complete bull that the queues are this long. Not enough servers and they’re not can’t possibly be using layers like they advertised they would.

And if you watch any stream right now you’ll see it hasn’t been doing a very good job considering how crowded it is.

That’s completely not true. Everyone knows that concurrent players greatly lessen over time. Even if it were true, they need to open more servers.

Yes! Because people also lost their damn minds about the idea of not being able to see a hundred people in every direction at all times so I’m guessing the cap for each layer is pretty high.

In other words, Blizzard has given this forum exactly what it asked for.

But they will still find a reason to be mad

#truth …

I think the layering was to preserve the streamers games to continue the free advertising. It makes sense i guess.
