I remember seeing a YouTube video about some kind of dot or something that a boss would put on players in a dungeon or raid and it eventually spread worldwide and everyone died constantly for a few days until blizz fixed it. Anyone out there playing when this happened? Always thought it would have been cool to have played during this!
Yep, Hakkar’s (the final boss of Zul Gurub) Blood Plague, it would affect pets but wouldn’t go away when they were dismissed.
Turned the major cities into ghost towns.
The Blood Plague was a dot that Hakkar, the final boss of ZG, would put on players and it would jump to nearby players. What basically happened is someone hearthed while still afflicted by the debuff and unintentionally started infecting other players. As Laeth mentioned with pets, this was also one of the major carriers.
For a 60 the dot wasn’t too overly devastating but for low level players it was basically death. Because it spread so easily as well it really stuck around for a while to the point that it shut down entire cities and players would actively warn each other “Hey, the plague is killing people in the Trade District!” and people would actively avoid those locations.
It was so fascinating a situation that the CDC did a study on it.
EDIT: Here, arm yourself with knowledge, friend
EDIT 2: MadSeasonShow also did a good video on the topic.
EDIT 3: Just want to make a comment real fast… Blizzard acknowledged this corrupted blood situation and have neither confirmed or denied that it would be re-created. They have acknowledged it though
EDIT 4: Oops, in my effort to share information on the topic I never even answered your originally question TC XD
Yes, I was around when it happened. I remember wandering into SW and then suddenly chunking HP. I was so absolutely confused at what they heck had just happened until I started reading chat and what people were saying.
Stuff like that was always cool to me, it may have been unintended but it certainly made the world feel alive and like something was always going on. As mentioned in this video, Kazaak was another situation like that. I remember being in Trade District and watching this massive demon being pulled all the way to SW keep and randomly mass shadow bolting and insta killing people, myself included.
Things like that just make the world feel more alive to me as there was always something new and different happening even in the safety of our capital cities.
I was playing when it happened. IF was full of bones…all of our low level bank alts took the hit immediately.
But it was epic…epic as it spread across the game and players went down.
Thanks for the history lesson sir. I totally agree. That’s what is so great about the game. The unexpected things happening and people scrambling to figure out how to deal with it. I really do think a major contributor to the decline of retail is just how safe and uneventful the world is. The ganking, the kited world bosses, city raids, plagues…all of it is inconvenient in a fun and exciting way if that makes any sense.
Please… someone… anyone for the love of all that is holy please tell me what game the intro music is from in this video… it’s haunting me!
Madseason is streaming, you can ask him. He mentioned it and I wish I could remember. From another game meaybe?
I actually posted the song in question in my last post, directly above yours, hehe. But yeah, the guy is streaming right now. He is pretty chill.
The Horde.
I love the Horde, but I can’t deny that’s funny!
Oops, sorry about that, should have looked closer. Yes, that’s it! Diablo. I love that opening to his vids.
Well, if you were in IF when a pet carried a disease back with it the whole city died.
It was from the final boss in the ZG raid.
It was terrifying to in a city until the bug was patched.
