The purpose I know was to please the high elf fans
However post-release. Void elves just disappeared by blizzard
more high elf cosmetics than void elves
added dark ranger cosmetics
no void elf cosmetics added
did blizzard realize void elves were a mistake and just re-make them (but not renamed) be able to be all types of elves? Was blizzard not happy with void elves?
Why make void elves at all in that case? Why not do what they apparently wanted to do to begin with and make high elves (far more high elf cosmetics than void elves) with added dark ranger in the future.
As it is, its pretty much 3 elves in one, and the original (void) is…well…been sent to the void to not be seen or heard.
Void Elves and their original customizations are fairly in-line with races like LF Draenei and Nightborne.
They just got a bunch of extras after players incessantly cried about wanting high elves.
The original plan was likely just to give the Alliance a reskinned Horde Race (like Nightborne is for the Horde).

Well, it’s obvious that they tried to please the High Elf fans and at the same time, made the Ren’dorei different than the Blood Elves. Even though I’m in love with my High Elf style Void Elves, I think they used them to finally introduce the Void as a “faction” into WoW.
Until Chronicles and Legion, it was barely present, only touched in a few stories, people widely assumed that the big counterpart of the Holy Light was actually Death magic and the demons.
I’m quite sure they’ll get additional customizations and story when the whole “void setup” with Xal’atath, Iridikron and N’Zoth pays off.
Some Void Elves joined the Dragonscale Expedition, probably excavating long lost mysterious of Dragon Isles that have relations to the Void Lords. Void Elves are very curious, but no one really knows their motives, may be they just want to summon the Void Lords and see Azeroth burn.
