What triggers clearcasting?

I was doing random blizzards in Org, and got a clear cast, so I went on top of bank and got a couple more without dealing any damage. The talent clearly states “after any damage spell hits a target”. Side note, I made sure there was never any creatures.

I just logged so I can’t check the tooltip but I believe it says after casting a damaging spell, not that the spell has to deal damage.

It doesn’t need to actually deal damage. You can start to precast Arcane Missiles on a target, and before the first missile launches, you can cancel the cast, but you can still proc Clearcasting the instant the spell begins.

Blizzard functions similarly, but as far I was aware, it needed to affect something, but apparently not. I’ll play with it a bit on my Mage.

For Blizzard it only triggers off the initial cast, not its ticks.

Yeah, but it’s triggering off of doing NO damage.

It does in fact say “…after any damage spell hits a target.”

It’s after you cast a damaging spell, whether that’s frostbolt, fire blast, Arcane Explosion or Blizzard, clearcasting is only once you’re cast hits an enemy.

Though for Arcane Missiles, each missile has a chance to proc a clearcasting IIRC though, that might be a private server thing and would need to test it.
If it does work that way I wonder if a shaman would be able to get a higher chance of getting a clearcasting proc if a chain lightning hits multiple people or if a druids swipe might since it hits 3.

The tooltip is wrong because blizzard are just really bad at their job.

Important to note that Clearcasting has an override script exclusively for Blizzard spells. This may be why it procs on cast (and/or what keeps it from proccing on ticks).
