What to do about future lag outs?

So today as soon as I logged into WoW I was having extremely bad lag, which wouldn’t really follow a rhyme or reason (sometimes super high world MS, sometimes home, sometimes both), would tend to flare up whenever I got into combat with anything for extended periods of time causing a massive spike. I tried continually resetting my routers and modem which didn’t do anything, and restarting the game would sometimes fix it for a short period before I would go back to having extreme lag.

It was pretty much only WoW having lag as I was in discord the whole time with normal ping, and besides a few moments where I would lag both in game and in discord, it seems like other apps on my computer were largely unaffected.

This persisted for ~6 hours as I stayed in game trying to fix it, then I logged off out of frustration. I just logged back in after leaving the game alone for a few hours and it seems to have completely cleared up. My question is what was likely the cause, and what caused it to clear up? I’m just curious if there’s some steps I can take if this happens again besides resetting my Internet connection.

Probably packet loss due to bad routing by ISP, which is very common. The network recovered on its own or due to network admins intervening.

Using a VPN might help next time.

Thanks so much for the advice and info! I really appreciate it.

EDIT: Just logged back in again and the latency is back with a vengeance unfortunately :frowning:

Your local ISP node might be overloaded. Hard to tell without any test data to review.
