Probably draenei or night elf.

I would argue that elves make the worst mages on the basis that elves are awful.

Lorewise?

Id say Human and Blood Elf. They’re the most common and seemingly powerful mages.

Never explained why Humans are so powerful though. One day they learn magic, the next day they literally create a fire storm that defeats the entire forest troll army.

I’d say gnomes for their intellect racial, whatever it is these days. I think you just get a bigger mana pool now? It used to be something with intellect.

Void elves also get that no cast pushback racial.

Human on Alliance, Blood elf on Horde.

On the Horde side, in terms of gameplay it’s probably Troll or Goblin. All the races are pretty close in terms of balance.

Lorewise, Blood Elf and Nightborne have a lot of mages.
