I created a character on remix after being away for many years. I logged back on and I am in Stormwind because the event is over. I am not max level. There are a few quests and some NPCs offering quests where I spawned. There is a gnome allowing different timeline selections as well. I am looking to make my way towards dragon flight but also want to know some background story before starting the dragon flight quest. I do not know which quest line to follow. I am currently in a weird quest chain that took me to gold shire inn with voiced dialog and cinematics. It has me traveling to many different regions. I guess my question is… is this the right direction to go in?
Oof. Well. that’s your problem, right there!
I’d pay somebody to remove my memories of the story from the BfA pre-patch through to the end of Shadowlands. Except I guess I’d come across them again … And I wouldn’t mind if they took Dragonflight as well - there wasn’t really a story there, good or bad, but the characterisation was sinful.
OK, joking aside (though I truly am sad about the degeneration in story and characters in the last four expansions.)
The first thing you need to know is that questing through any of the timelines/expansions will get you from level 10 to 70 with plenty of XP to spare. You simply don’t have enough XP to gain to spend time in multiple expansions. If you go and do, say, Legion, you will probably be 70 before finishing three zones and won’t need to hit Dragonflight at all.
Plan 1:
You could hit up the start of a few expansions on the way in, just to unlock some features and open travel for yourself when you hit 80. You could
- Start Warlords of Dreanor (lots of XP in the opening sequence!), establisg a Garrison, and get a Garrison Hearthstone
- Start Legion, pick up a Dalaran Hearthstone and an Artifact Weapon for transmog
- Start BfA, get Friendly in three zones, open World Quests and the Ship so you can travel to Zuldazar
- Start Shadowlands, get to Oribos. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to get out of Oribos to the Shadowlands proper unless you quest your way around, and it’snotthe greatest of expansions.
You can start different expansions by going backto Chromie and asking for a different Timeline. So you can do a bit of each.
By the time you do all of that, you won’t have much left to do in Dragonflight or wherever else you choose to get to 70.
You will have at least seen the continents you are not familiar with, and opened some options there.
Plan 2:
Make multiple alts, send each one to a different expansion. The speed of levelling nowadays is crazy. 10-70 has been done in under 5 hours, though you won’t achieve those sorts of speeds.
Plan 3:
Watch videos to summarise the expansion stories. Channel Nobbel87 on YouTube is a reliable source for lore information…
This will have the advantage of including the max-level story. As you may recall, you only reach the foothills of an expansion’s story while levelling. The big stuff - the peaks - is all contained in the raids and the end-game quests. So for example, if you just levelled through Pandaria, you would know nothing about Vol’jin’s Rebellion, or Anduin getting crushed, or Garrosh being brought to trial … which is what sets up the next expansion, Warlords.
Thank you for your detailed response. I really appreciate it. Sounds like I will make it to dragon flight level soon and should just pick up the story there and watch videos to fill in gaps.
