I am playing rogue, I was thinking of leatherworking / skinning, I know the best money making probably would just double up gathering mining and herbalism, but is there any decent change to be made with leatherworking?
LW, not really. It is the skinning that will generate you the cash from selling the leather.
If you wanna make money, mining may be the way to go. With both Blacksmithing and J/C needing ore in TBC, the market potential will be huge for many weeks.
EDIT: also Engineering will need ore too.
With LW nerfs not nearly as many people will be going LW. So skinning may or may not be very good income. Really just depends on your server and how many people who are rolling LW plan on buying the lvls or farming it themselves.
Unlike tailoring and blacksmithing, leatherworking doesn’t really offer much notable gear in p1 that actually lasts past p1. Few exceptions like ele/resto shaman but rogues, enhance, hunters can all replace primalstrike in p1.
As a rogue right now herb/mining and doing stealth runs looks to be one of the more profitable options for pure gold farming.
And I’m sure you’ve heard of prot paladins and gold farming on them by now.
Edit: if you are in the top 5% for hitting 70 and quickly get the lw patterns that are pre raid options you might make a pretty penny off that. But thats pretty volatile as the patterns aren’t hard to get so the AH will be flooded with them after the 2nd wave hits 70.
For money making your probably want Alchemy and Tailoring for the cooldowns. Tailoring will trail off as content phases release since the crafted gear will start to get outpaced, but it’s likely people will still need transmutes. Jewelcrafting will always be in demand, even though it will be a popular profession, just for the gems, especially if you get your hands on rare recipes. Enchanting is always in demand, and you’re more likely to get rare recipes if it’s your raiding main, and you’ll get the added benefit of enchanting your own gear. If you only have one character, though, getting gathering professions is probably best, with an emphasis on herbalism and mining, or herbalism and alchemy. Druids make excellent gatherers due to the fact that they have high mobility and the ability to stealth, but rogues actually have an edge on mining due to their large amount of crowd control near nodes, and the fact that they can reset an enemy with a vanish.
Now, with all of that said, Leatherworking is an excellent rogue profession. You’ll be able to craft useful gear early on, and you’ll be desirable during raids for your drums. Skinning pairs well with it, and is, in my opinion, the easiest profession to level, since you gather skill points from killing mobs, which also gets you experience points. With all of that said, you should really pick a profession that is useful to you so that you can leverage it no matter the market influence, and if you can make some extra dosh, then all the better. Personally, I think rogues benefit the most from Leatherworking and Jewelcrafting, so a LW/Skinner or JC/Miner would both be good calls. Or LW/JC and make a gathering alt.
To summarize, it depends on how many characters you’re willing to level, as well as how much you emphasize profits over performance.
