What place would a frost mage have in Classic?

Hi hi!

I remember being a kid and rolling an Undead Fire Mage - heaps fun! Only got the bag of bones to about level 19 before life happened.

Now in retail I have mained a Frosticle Mage for 3 years, I know its place and limits in retail but I cant say the same for Classic?

Im a PvP enthusiast but I love raiding just as much. I also want that added travel option via portals for ease of access to zones - question is though, where would I fit in?

Frost mages were like the go-to everything. In PvP: They are CC gods. In PvE: You level as frost mage and you are a frost mage until you beat Molten Core.

Frost is the standard PvE DPS build for the first couple of tiers of raiding due to too many things being immune to fire damage.

They also do great in PvP with all their CC.

Frost is ideal in PvP and is the only option for PvE until we’re out of the BRM raids.

What about after the first few tiers, I detest arcane playstyle it makes me want to sleep.

Fire can be quite the powerhouse I’ve heard?

Molten Core, easily.

Spam frostbolt. Spam it.

Once you beat Molten Care: You were a fire mage. Basicly the same as the frost mage but with one more button to press. Also in PvP: Fire mages were considered the “3 minute spec” as you would cast all of your ablities that have like a 3 minute cooldown. But when they are up: you just nuke everyone.

Fire replaces Frost as the top DPS spec in the later raid tiers once you stop running into fire immune things so often.

Hmmm. Am I right to assume the swap to fire or arcane is going to be mandatory? I know Frost in retail is powerful in its own right but back in Classic there was a very clear threshold after MC and frost kind of plateaued its usefulness?

But don’t forget, all mages had access to all spells, so IIRC you still could cast arcane missles as frost, and fireballs.

So you had weird rotations and ranked spells, been a long time sry if I’m mistaken.

Every mage in MC/BWL is a frost mage.

Arcane is not a thing in Classic. Too mana hungry. But I think there will still be frost mages past Molten Care simply for their CC. Probably a half and half split.

Gotcha. Sounds ideal for my playstyle. I have really grown accustomed to core frost mechanics - so when I go back and start it again with the Classic version of Frost, it shouldnt feel too different and thus I might have a slightly easier time than someone who never played it.

Im happy my frosty knickers retains her power in PvP. Very very happy :joy:

Yeah but it’s ineffective in MC and BWL because of resist.

If you want a really simple, clean, etc guide on Classic mages. He does AMAZING guides on classes (He doesn’t cover all of them. Probably only the ones he played)
