What makes classic feel better than retail

I dont know what it is, when i have played retail over the last couple of years the gameplay actually just feels bad. My class doesnt feel fun to play, combat is boring leveling up or gearing feels bad etc,

then i play classic and TBC and its the complete opposite. Its really strange and i just cant put my finger on it at all. Like my mage \warrior have a better rotation on live but it just feel bad to quest or to explore or pvp. No idea what it is

coz here u actually explore
u actually pvp \ each death makes it pain in the a to run from grave \ u get buffs in dungeons for fighting in the zone
on retail it feels like u log in and start being teleported from zone to zone quickly killin 10 mobs with 1 cast

no effort in leveling in retail. leveled a warrior 1-60 in less than 2 days (/played was 1 day, 23hours) over a 5 days. yeah i not playing it now he got crappy gear that got him by but i did not have the connection to my retail char as I did for classic leveled warrior.

I would say that the real appeal of Classic and TBCC is that the world of World of Warcraft actually matters. Talent choices matter and so do professions and weapon skills and reputation and more nuanced character stats…not to mention that the world remains a dangerous place. In Retail by comparison (to me anyway) all of this is merely incidental to getting players into instanced content. I know that “end game” has always been this, but it used to be that the game was as broad as it was deep. Now it strikes me as very shallow and a very fine hole in the middle of it, with any sort of depth.

It’s the lack of Barber Shops, Transmog, LFG, LFD/LFR… mostly.

i know what you mean by the quote you replied to…
but its sad LFG is one of the lacked ones.

Maybe for some. I actually am very happy that there is no LFG tool (thus far).

/4 lf1m CC for H Manatombs - pst

Is some of my favorite gameplay in WoW.

Your response basically hits the nail on the head for me and the reasons why I play TBCC instead of retail.

rpg wise classic is better then modern im leveling a pally currently (68) and ive also almost maxed out his profs and actually used them to gear myself up, BUT and this is a big BUT, modern wows combat is infinitely better its more reactive fast paced and feels sliky smooth (when geared properly) rotations actually exist now, both have goods and bads but if you would ask me to only pick one, id pick mordern wow without thinking twice even with all its flaws.

I mean i agree rotations are better, but i do not agree combat is better. Questing or just running around killing mobs or doing dungeons feels way better in classic even though the classes lack a rotation.

So to explain, in retail i hate questing, i hate everything other than arena. But in classic i actually dont mind running around questing, doing dungeons etc.

This is all my opinion, but i would rather quest\dungeon in classic than play retail at all. Maybe retail is just so easy, or i like that you have to prepare for pulls in classic or maybe its the world element. No idea, i play shadowlands or BFA and i get bored in like 10 mins. Dungeons feel so bad in retail, gear feels bad to get, pressing abilities doesnt feel like anything, questing is so easy its boring.

well this is because modern isnt focused on leveling its focused on endgame if you want your rotation to feel good you have to do raids or m+ , trust me it feels great in this type of content, but if you want it to feel good outside in the world it wont because we can one shot whatever we touch there

It’s “new” while retail hasn’t had a major update for near 7 months now, with no idea when that update will come

IMO retail is way more fun to play, with every class feeling way more kinetic and having to manage everything on the fly. When I play my retail Warrior I always have something to press, while in Classic if I don’t have Rage I get to just sit there and autoattack. Retail’s shortcomings is in what there is to actually do - it can get a little overwhelming with so many different reputations that give so many different rewards…of which over half have no actual bearing on character progress and are mostly cosmetics, Classic meanwhile there’s “less” to do but it’s more clearly defined and has a bigger impact on your actual character. You know this rep unlocks this instance and that rep has this gear that you need, and that’s all there is to it

At the end of the day, I enjoy Shadowlands on paper more than Classic (here’s your complimentary torch and pitchfork) it’s just an issue of being stuck in an extremely long patch cycle with an expansion launch’s worth of post-leveling content

For me gear/character progression in classic is super good. It’s fun to do a quest and be like “Oh yeah that’s awesome, I really want that”

Then on retail I will usually just blitz through quests and once I go to vendor I’m like “Alright what here can replace my gear”

Level and ilevel scaling completely ruins that as far as I’m concerned.

And then there’s talent trees where each level you get something, even if it’s very small while working towards a big ability.

That’s just fun to me.

Depends on what you mean. I think classic is a “dumpster fire” from how exploitable the content is. Retail doesn’t really have this unless it’s discovered. The content being known pushes people to play a certain way, just like how retail pruned the classes.

This reminds me of one of the major differences I failed to mention in my last post; namely the true diversity of classes. That’s a word that gets its mileage in this day and age, but wrt to WoW classes, there was real uniqueness around common themes, for all roles: deeps, healz and tanking. As the game evolved, I think the Devs began to feel that appeal was to be found in more of a homogenized spectrum (ie narrower). I disagree, and this is one of the major things I like about C/TBCC over Retail.

To me its because Shamans and Paladins, my favorite Classes, actually feel like support Classes and completely embody the idea of these Class concepts. In Retail, they just feel like gutted concepts lacking almost all of their utility and are just basic DPS builder/spender copy pasted architypes, like every Class generally.

In fact, most Classes feel nearly identical with mild flavor inside of their niche roles. Feels like theres 3 Classes Tank, DPS, Healer.

Stats, same thing. Retails goal with stats are to make ILVL the only one you pursue. This isn’t always the case, but its the case most of the time and means all gear is essentially the exact same with only ILVL differenciating them. This is boring.

Same with how gear looks. I feel like 2-3 sets were reskinned for all of Shadowlands on my Warlock. My Raid gear is literally just copy and pasted for all Cloth users. There is no interesting stats or gear concepts. I cant gear in anyway that isnt purely pushing my DPS higher, and any specializing just pushes my DPS 1% higher than non optimal pieces. Boring, boring, boring.

Yep, retail = shallow game aimed at shallow players. Classic offers a more in depth experience, particularly its RPG and community-building elements, which have all but been eliminated from the modern game in favor of instant gratification and superficial rewards.

Right… so not cosmetic things such as transmog, and barber shops makes people love how the game and classes play?

You’re right for the whole LFD thing… But not the LFG department… especially seeing how the actual tbc had such a feature. :man_shrugging:
