What makes a guild important?

Do people still need guilds to be successful in raiding, arenas, and rated battlegrounds?

Probably not. But guilds offer more than just “success at some type of content.”

A guild is important because WoW is best experienced as a social game, playing with people who you’re friends with.

You can do a whole lot of stuff in WoW without a guild, but it’s definitely better with one.

You can PuG alot of the content and be alright, at least up to 15+ keys and heroic raids, though those may vary.

Guilds, schedules, order, discipline, structure, accountability, cohesiveness. Of course being in a guild is better than not. There are bad guilds, but finding a good one makes WoW 1000000% better. Having your small community to progress with makes eventually makes the game easier as well.

One of the big problems in WoW is people putting themselves over the guild and team hopping because they think they are the best. Also a lot of entitled players who can’t mesh with a team because they’ve never been able to share or put their own desires aside for others.

This probably depends on you and if you can pug well.

To me, a guild is a place to keep all my characters’ stuff, per server.

I was in a casual raiding guild back in vanilla, and we could clear MC and Onyxia (about 50% on 1st or 2nd try. lol), about halfway through BWL, but then TBC came out, and they all blasted to 70 while I played alts and questsed slowly through Outland. They were a good social connection, and got me my first raid set, which I still transmog to this day.

A good guild leader is worth his/her weight in gold and makes everything better/more fun.

Guilds are your gaming family, you can ask for help or offer it, a great place to enjoy the game though it’s not exclusive just to guilds by any means.

Some of my dearest memories are with my guild.

No, but a guild offers stability and a place to hang out when not doing content.

I mean, under the best circumstances? A guild is a bunch of online friends who all log on and do something together. It really is fun. During Cata my guild was a sort of social group of people who did various things, some of them as a group. We had a lady who was in her 70s or 80s and just wanted to be in a guild to have someone to say “hi” to. We had a 12 year old. We had three guys in the armed forces. We had three middle-aged lesbians. It was cool. Sadly, the content drought before MoP killed the guild. But we had a blast for awhile.

I do think the trick is to find the right group of people and that has gotten harder largely thanks to Blizzard making less chill content. You get to know one-another while doing stuff out in the world, not while running M+ or a raid. And having some chill players in a guild is a good thing but Blizzard neglects those players.

Guild should be a place where people can hang, coordinate, and enjoy socializing while playing.

I’ve had poor luck. Usually ends up being a place where people ignore each other outside raid nights until they need their weekly M+ or to see if someone has a recipe to make an item they need.

I gave up. Ridin solo.

It depends. You can pug everything up to heroic raid bosses and M15+ succesfully with some luck, especially if you are a skilled player.

Guilds just make it easier as above posts said. Everything is coordinated and schedules are set. You likely end up making some online friends along the way and the overall experience is more fun then flying solo.

Totally agree with you about individuals putting themselves over the guild but conversely what about guilds who treat individuals as expendable and exclude you from their small cliques in activities other raiding? It goes both ways.

It gives consistency. A good one will be your central hub for progression and activities. You can also find the same via other online community, not necessarily have to be guilded with them.

Finding one that matches your playstyle and goal is the gotcha imo.

Just my experiences with guilds, every single one that I have been in has their own little cliques of players that only socialize in that clique and barley speak to or help anyone outside of it.

It’s why I’m not in one now.

Having a nice tabard

Nothing unless you’re a Mythic raider, since that’s an environment in which Blizzard artificially forces Guilds to be relevant with archaic lockout rules.

Guilds, with that one exception, are just a social construct. You don’t need them, but they can make your experience more enjoyable, since you get to know a group of people instead of constantly bouncing between pug groups.
