What makes a dungeon fun?

Why do I have this feeling of more fun in SL dungeons than I did in BFA?

What exactly makes a dungeon fun?

Better art, more engagement via mechanics sometimes, more varied enemies (Tol Dagor, Shrine of the Storm, and The Siege of Boralus were very poorly varied), and of course friendship.

Trash mobs, more trash to kill = more fun!

I though the BFA dungeons were reasonably fun when they were new, but I think the SL dungeons are a bit more creative.

New things feel fresh. News at 11.

One small thing?

I prefer a dungeon with a map/design that I can UNDERSTAND.

Waycrest Manor (BfA) and Theater of Pain (SL) both have the same problem in that the dungeon is 500 small little ā€œareasā€, each has their own map, with no logical connection to any of them/ you can’t actually ā€œzoom outā€ and see how all those little maps connect to each other. The result is disorienting, despite having a map right in front of you!

If your group wipes and you need to run back before you’re familiar with the place… good luck, Chuck!

And I like mechanics that you can figure out without having to run to Wowhead. The Meathook is a good design. A little weird at first, but you can figure it out without Wowhead.

The ā€œodd charm outā€ of Mistcaller makes me want to uninstall. Totally annoying.

Instead of trying to explain ā€œwhat’s funā€ and never really understanding it, it’s easier to make something and then IMMEDIATELY realizing ā€œthis is terrible.ā€

Loot. If I get loot its great. If I walk out with nothing but a repair bill then I don’t bother going back. Its just a waste so I’ll go do world quests and emissaries for gear. But wait blizz took that out. Way less world quests, no emissaries. So I go and do pvp but now pvp gear is strictly blues with no purples unless you do pre-made rated. Well damn guess I cant do that then. I digress. Bfa wasn’t perfect I’ll be the first to admit but at least I didn’t have much issue getting gear, especially for my army of alts. Hopefully conquest points come back so I can run random bgs, fill the bar and get a purple.

There was never any expansion where I didn’t like their dungeons during their first week or two.

Laid back fun people to do them with.

for me i like to take my time and crawl through them.

of course, if using the finder tool, i will do my best to just keep up to not be ā€˜that dude’ who causes delays

well they’re easier for the most part - that always is a start lol

Well I didn’t enjoy BFA much even at launch. The expansion felt too plain and grounded coming off of Legion, and it didn’t make me feel too excited.

I look at dungeons through the lens of how well they’ll work for M+, whether certain packs will be good/bad with certain affixes, or whether mechanics will scale well up to 20+.

So far, I’m impressed. There’s been no mechanics that I’ve seen that will be especially obnoxious once scaled up, and even the most cramped dungeons, like Sanguine Depths still aren’t nearly as claustrophobic as stuff like Tol Dagor or Blackrook Hold.

I agree with this a lot, make the dungeon logic/path understandable, or more so.

For me, I struggle to visualize these maps, even with add-ons. I end up needing to follow someone who has done it a bunch.

I would love maps that dealt with the three dimensional aspect a lot better.

No pirates. Thank goodness.

I’m having a hard time putting my finger on it but having done all 8 thus far, I only sorta dislike Plaguefall, and that’s because I ran it with a healer who at the end had 4 dispels to my brewmasters 37.

I’ve liked most bosses, and the pathing in ever dungeon has made sense. The covenant bonuses are a fun sort of callback to court of stars.

One thing I’ve noticed perhaps is that the trash isn’t all clumped together . And some dungeons don’t have a dumb amount of it, which seemed like a go to model for bfa.

It definitely feels like they’re putting way more emphasis on non-healer dispels.

So many diseases and poisons to cleanse, and magic buffs to purge or enrages to tranq shot/shiv/sooth.

Massive pulls, fast-paced action, challenging yet manageable mechanics, abilities which have counterplay, and a suitable balance of trash and boss fights.

I can’t see myself enjoying Plaguefall over and over for 2 years…
