What made the playerbase think we are going to get Dragon Isles Expansion?

B/c of a dragon pack sale Blizzard was doing??

I mean there is a cat pack sale going on now…does that mean we are going to have a Feline expansion coming up?

I guess I am being cheeky but seriously, what originally made the playerbase think Dragon Isles is next?

sheer desperate hope for something that actually interests them, rather than unasked for concepts and creator’s pets getting crammed down our throats

Passing up datamining that suggests next expansion pre-order bonus content…

There’s been some Dragon-related lore going on in the background for a while now. Nothing too major, of course, but its been there. Wrathion has been poking around, Ysera died and we went to the Shadowlands and helped her out, etc…

In a nutshell, Dragons have been on the back burner for a while now. Kind of like how Death was for a while. We got hints of the Scourge stirring back in WoD, for example, and then in Legion the undead and death-related entities were starting to creep in more, then in BFA we got even more of this going with Bwonsamdi, the Drust, the San’layn, etc…

The Dragon Isles are just a very obvious set of potential zones for an expansion. I wouldn’t say anything in specific is pointing there, but the foundation has been set up.

Lava eels thats why. Also hungry lava eels is what frightens Zovaal the most. Sooo…

Also beware of ducks of course. They might pop up when you least expect it.

No, it was because of datamined dragon stuff that came the same way as past datamined stuff that we got as “bonus” items from previous xpacs.

Generally speaking, this particular section of the datamining is an indication of what the next xpac might be about. Since they found dragon stuff there, it tracks the next xpac will have something to do with dragons.

It’s among the very few Azerothian locations not yet in-game. It has been mentioned as possible content all the way back in Vanilla. Since Legion, we’ve seen more and more references to dragons, including Wrathion allegedly going to/trying to find the Dragon Isles.

Basically the usual.

Wait, ducks are the Spanish Inquisition?

Well, the “Galakrond’s fall” map looks like it is being updated in 9.2.5—It seems as if his skeleton is missing. So that certainly tracks for dragon isles.

A few reasons;

  • The hope for good content.
  • The emphasis the game store put on dragon mounts.
  • It’s a new area that’s been hinted at in the lore but not seen.
  • The dragon’s still have story potential to be addressed, especially since they were put on the extinction clock in Legion.
  • Some people not wanting another cosmic expansion after Shadowlands (or until the one after Shadowlands), which rules out Void Lord invasion, Light invasion, Lifelands or Light vs Void showdown.
  • Galakrond’s been hinted at playing a role in the next expansion.
  • Chromantus (a five-headed dragon whose power rivalled Deathwing’s) is still out there, just waiting for some arcane magic to wake him up.

For starters there was a great desire to return to Azeroth itself over this cosmology journey that Blizzard was focused. Building upon that people looked to what areas of Azeroth hadn’t been visited yet and the Dragon Isles had been recently teased with BfA, so it more in peoples mind over other potential areas.

At the same time people generally assumed that the Dragon Isles themselves would have been the 8.3 zone, however when we got the revamped Vale of Eternal Blossoms and Uldum…. it led to speculation that the Dragon Isles were being saved for a expansion setting, like how the Broken Isles was the expansion for Legion.

From there people looked for signs from Blizzard that would confirm the theory for them, which for many the Dragon Bundle did on account of wow store serving as a lowkey hint in some manner.

The playerbase just wanting to say ‘FINALLY, SOME GOOD F-ING FOOD’ … Nah, but in reality datamining. (Like other people said)

Even just the concept of returning to Azeroth after Shadowlands and cleaning up some goings on would be amazing to me (and by the sounds of it, a lot of other players too), I’d give anything to be back slappin’ ghouls and stabbin’ pigs and givin’ ogres a knuckle sandwich. There’s enough on Azeroth that we really don’t need another ‘cosmic threat’ to push the story.

A lot of us are tired of being the CHAMPYOON, let us go back to the meat and potatoes!

that datamined dragon stuff was way after people started talking about Dragon Isle expansion…

Can’t lean on what was “confirmed” later on…what originally started this rumor?

false hope…you can’t have good content if you have consistent bad writing…

My opinion, of course.

So, here’s to false hope. Cheers.

Speculation started during BfA because there was something on one of the island expeditions that seemed to hint to it, but I confess I don’t remember what the clue was. I just remember someone (possibly Bellular?) pointing it out in a video.

I’m just hoping they bring things back to Azeroth.

Quel’Thalas and the Azuremyst Isles are in dire need of updating and adding into the map proper.

Classic showed me that the old cartoony graphics aged about as well as anything from 04 could. It looked fine to me. But when you have 06 graphics next to 21 graphics the differences could not be more garish. It’s really a shame Eversong is completely hideous as a result.

Plus there’s just weird ish. Like in Silvermoon I think a little girl is supposed to be chasing a toy robot. But the Belf kid model didn’t exist yet so it’s just a fully proportioned adult elf shrunken to child size. It’s like a fever dream. Definitely needs an update.

Plus with the leveling changes you could just put fresh max level content there. I don’t know anyone who still does the Eversong and Ghostlands quests. I went down there to get revered for the Argent Crusader prerequisites and I only ever saw Alliance there doing the Velf questline. Otherwise it was just me. So I don’t think too many people will be upset if it goes the way of the dodo for a revamped experience.

The Dragon Isles would allow for an excuse to do that by revisiting Azeroth. That’s my only real interest tbh. WoW dragons don’t do much for me. I actually learned the other day the Red fire breath has life giving qualities as well. Which puts the Wrathgate in new context. I’d honestly thought they were just sterilizing the place this whole time.

So thats about how much interest I have in them. But if it means going back to Azeroth and touching up old content I’m game for whatever.

Jeeze, lighten up, lol. Dataminers just think it’s likely. I don’t think most people will be mad if it’s something else.

Not to mention, we’ve been revisiting expansions since WoD:

Legion - BC 2.0
BFA - MoP 2.0
Shadowlands - Wrath 2.0

Last one to be done is Cata, and that means dragons.

There’s also something about Wrathion mentioning the Dragon Isle I think. And Wrathion’s return in general.

There’s a funny thing about a Chinese Gamer who - in Sept 2017 - predicted 8.0 and 9.0.

In short:
TBC was about the Horde/Dark Portal and Burning Legion:

  • 6.0 = WoD = Horde
  • 7.0 = Legion = Burning Legion

WotLK was about Old Gods (Yogg-Saron) and Scourge:

  • 8.0 = BFA = Old Gods (more than faction war by far)
  • 9.0 = Shadowlands = Scourge/Lich King/Domination

Cataclysm was about Dragons and Elementals:

  • 10.0 = Dragons
  • 11.0 = Elementals
(No idea why Dragons before Elementals)

MOP was about Horde vs Alliance and the Sha:

  • 12.0 = Horde vs Alliance
  • 13.0 = Sha
(For the Sha part he said it should be a Void Lord)

Supposedly for 8.0 → 12.0 the Void Lords were the real villain behind everything, and 13.0 would be us taking it to them.

I’d say SL is closer to WoD than Wrath. We spend the entire expansion in an alternate world/plane that doesn’t directly affect Azeroth, chasing down the evil warchief who escaped at the end of the last expansion. Oh, and Thrall meets his mom. Again.
