What keybinds do you use?

I have been using a 12 button MMO mouse for a majority of my rotation and DPS cooldowns or CCs since 2009, and a few years ago I developed carpal tunnel. Because of this I only play casually these days, as long gaming sessions irritate my right hand. I am going to change up all my keybinds and get a regular mouse with two buttons on the side. Thing is it’s been so long since I used the keyboard I figured I should probe the masses for how they handle it.

I started leveling a new hunter just to get used to the new binds, and I am setting them up as I unlock new talents. Right now for the main damaging abilities I have Arcane shot on E, Steady Shot on F, Aimed Shot on R, and Kill Shot on C. I am considering Multi-Shot on Shift-E and Rapid Fire on Shift-F.

How do you guys set up your binds?

Baseline buttons + shift modified
1-5 (mb 6 for some classes)
QET
NM
2 side on mouse

Most heavily used class abilities on 2-4

` through 6

Mouse 4-9

Nothing is bound with modifiers, everything is using modifier macros. Mouse buttons get anything with [@mouseover] or [@cursor] logic.

I appreciate you both. I usually start with my hunter for things like this and then later incorporate it to other classes. Something I have wanted to know the most is where do you put your high KPM abilities? I keep wondering if R is too far of a reach for Aimed Shot, but I need to play around with it for a longer period before I really know for sure. On my mouse I decided to put my movement abilities as well as @cursor abilities like Volley and Tar Trap. I have never successfully switched back to the keyboard from the mouse, so I am hoping to borrow some ideas and see if they work well for me.

Aimed shot, cobra shot, raptor strike - 3
arcane shot, kill command, kill command - 2

Similar to above.
I use ` through 6 as well as Q, E, R, T, F, G. Special abilities are bound to F1 to F4. I use a Corsair mouse with two extra buttons for Disengage and Aspect of the Cheetah and a thumb button set as L-Shift as a modifier.

Thanks a bunch! This gives me some ideas to play around with. Thanks again for the insight everyone.

i am left handed and i conceived of a sort of mirrored version of wasd for myself

wasd → pl;’

my first row (that i use for gcds and abilities with a cooldown shorter than 1 minute)
uiojkmn90-]\

second row is just that with an alt modifier

third row is
.h alt+h alt+n alt+[ alt+] y

R is interrupt

Q is CC

All my movement is on the mouse - have strafe left and right and reverse bound to mouse buttons, leaving my left hand free for abilities.

I do have two additional buttons on my mouse not needed for basic movement. I’ll typically bind those either to special movement (Fel Rush, Harpoon) or targeted abilities (Freezing/Tar Trap). For whatever reason, Multi-Shot is on my mouse. Just very used to it there (That button is harpoon if on Survival, Multi-Shot if on BM).

I also keep misdirection, interrupt and dispel on the mouse, on the “nudge the scroll wheel left and right” buttons, because I can react very quickly with those without stretching for something out of my normal ability rotation.

Key abilities on mouse 3/4 and wheel, as well as keys within reach of WASD (so R, Q, Z, etc) the lesser used the ability the longer the reach.

Modifications are used for things I don’t want to fat finger (interrupt, lust, larger CDs, etc).

Mainly I try to keep away from the # row, and around the movement keys+mouse buttons/wheel.

Using the number row is something I need to work on.

If you move with

W - forward
A/D - strafe
(do not backpaddle, only strafe)

The best possible keybinds for most people are:
Q S E R F

These should normally be the most used abilities. E R F are handled by the index finger, S by the middle finger, Q by the unnamed finger (pinkie is for Shift). Ideally, you’d want to distribute the “load” as equally as possible between the 3 fingers.

Next in priority - the above 5 prime keys + the Shift modifier.

Next come 1-4, C X V G T and the button to the left of 1 (tilde)

Regarding the mouse - mouse wheel up/down is fantastic, but do not use the mouse wheel for your most often used abilities as this will destroy your right hand index finger.

Regarding MMO mice - binding your whole rotation to the side buttons is unbearable stress for the right hand thumb finger, and will eventually damage it.

In summary, for longevity and ergonomics, do your best to distribute your whole rotation as evenly as possible between all different fingers across both hands in a way you feel comfortable

Good luck!

I’ve always thought those mmo-million-button mice sound really awkward to use. Like, how do select the right button among 10 or 12 side buttons with just your thumb? I never tried it though so maybe you get used to it.

Anyway, I use WASD for forward/backward/strafe, turn by holding right mouse, and

Main rotational skills on first bar with
1,2,3,4,5,6,E,R,T,F,G,Y

Longer CDs and defensives on another bar with
shift+1,2,3,4,5,6,E,R,T,F,G,Y

And random stuff assigned to
Z,X,C,V,B and F1-F5

May seem weird to some, but been working for me for some years now.

It took a little bit to wrap my mind around when I first got it but once I did I never looked back. That ultimately ended up being my undoing, I am sure. For the years before I developed a problem I was a 96-99% parser. Now I just hover around the 70s. Hoping to try a lot of the suggestions here to see what works and maybe I’ll start playing more than casually again. Thanks for the info! I haven’t used F1-F5 yet. Maybe I’ll give it a go.

Yeah, F1-F5 is kinda awkward to reach so I only put stuff there with long CDs that I don’t need to hit often.

On a side note, I have a 5 button mouse but only use one of the two side buttons because the farther one is too awkward for me to reach comfortably, lol.

Same. My mouse has 6 buttons under the thumb which are easy to identify by touch. There are two more under the index finger at the edge of left click (these are mapped to DPI up and DPI down out of the box), those are more annoying to use so they get things like Fetch.

I use a Tartarus Pro (a Belkin before that) and I mouse move. I use two buttons on the side of my mouse to strafe.

I removed the little thumb joystick (it just pulls out) and mapped the thumb button to ctrl, alt, and shift. I lay out my spells in a bunch of 4x3 grids. That gives my 48 keybinds by itself.

Then, I mapped 5, 10, and 15 to alternate profiles to bring up incidentals (eg. holding 15 and pressing 2 brings up my bags, 15 and 1 brings up my map, etc.).

I also use some of the bottom row for things like special action buttons. One day, I might map other things there, but I’ve rarely needed more buttons.

Edit: Also, there is an incredible Ergonomic Mouse Pad Wrist Support with Massage Design on Amazon by PYEDCA. I use the bigger one ate 12.4 x 8.7 x 1.2. Most comfortable wrist support I’ve ever had.

Mouse 4-9 are under my thumb, with 4 and 7 closest to my wrist. Mouse + and - are on the left edge under my index finger.

I do drastically hope that they’re all diff modifiers, but some of those still look too overloaded, like disengage
