What keeps you playing WoW? (An anti-quit thread)

Ever notice how anti-gaming stories tend to tell the players escape the virtual world and go level up themselves or play the “game of life”? At first this would sound appealing to the common addict but this statement varies depending on your physical appearance and level of neuroticism. In games, everyone more or less has a base model/appearance and you can advance with some effort. Put in more effort and you will notice returns. In real life, your returns will be vary depending on what people are looking for. You will be judged on your physical appearance more than your stats --and yes that is after mandatory grooming and physical exercise. You will be judged your height and face which you won’t be able to control without going through painful, expensive, and risky procedures. What does life of an average male look like? You won’t enjoy aspects of your job after awhile if you had some passion in the first place. People and work politics will start to drain your soul. You have less free time then you used to and time seems to fly faster than before. Male pattern baldness starts to kick in. Dating gets alot harder compared to college. You have more money than before but feel unhappy because you don’t know what to spend it on or not enough to buy what you want (happiness). If you’re problems are dating then I got bad news. You will end up in a vapid relationship and settle because you don’t want to die alone. You gossip about people with better lives than you but secretly wish you were them. Below average male’s life is even more destructive and depressing. Why try when you know you won’t win in the end? Physical attractiveness is key to happiness in life, you won’t win if you have it. It’s better to play the virtual world treadmill than to do it in life. This doesn’t apply to everyone. I’m speaking out to average and below average males who think that quitting games and working on yourself will have returns. You’re racing against time and nature in a world where youth and genetic makeup is the most important thing.

Wall of text crit for 50,000,000.

To long to read but I’ll answer your title question, since half way through your post I realized it was never going to discuss your question.

What keeps me playing wow?

I play because I enjoy spending time with my guild. Helps that we have activities all the time, from rp, to raids, dungeons, and more. Uhhh, and I’m very happily married, kids, work from home and my wife doesn’t need to work at all. I run OCR’s monthly to keep myself healthy. -signed your average male.

I have a decent job with enough money saved by being frugal, my own apartment, go to gym, eat healthy as possible (every boring healthy food you can imagine). These things are mandatory and not things I enjoy doing. This doesn’t change the fact that I’m physically unattractive. I have been doing this for years and yet the world still treats me the same (dating and life). Why should I keep leveling myself up?

My guild keeps me playing. Community is an essential pillar in any guild, and the amount of fun you can gave goes up by such an insane amount.

I like flying but subbing on and off till this expansion is over.Flying in wow is much prettier than looking at this concrete jungle and 80 percent cloudy days of real life.

I quit playing about a day or two after getting Pathfinder, Part 2. I plan on staying subscribed though and look forward to checking out Classic in a couple of weeks but otherwise, like OP, am looking for something to do.

Habit (some call this addiction) but I did take of for a few months or more. Played EliteDangerous!

Flying is available, and overall, the game seems to be in a better spot than the trainwreck corpse fueled dumpster fire that was launch.

Mechagon is cool, and Nazwhateverthefluck it is is ok, a lot more tolerable with flying.

Thanks for the response. I know for sure that I’m not a person destined for greatness. My lack of physical attractiveness also demotivates me for trying. How do I come to accept my subpar future knowing the life I want to have is impossible? I can increase my height via leg lengthening but I will never be able to run/squat again. I can have my face restructured but risk looking unnatural and judged for getting cosmetic procedures done as a man. It seems that I was destined to lose. At least in WoW, I can feel important for the moment where I do well on progression or PVP because it makes myself and others happy.

Im not bored yet. Once i get bored, I’ll do what i do every expansion and take a break.

It’s also mindless fun and RP is always there to jump into.

Good luck finding any of them willing to get through your wall of text that reads like it was tossed together by a bot.

Also, there’s nothing wrong with deciding to switch to less escapists pastimes.

Most “quit threads” lament that wow isn’t as engaging or emotionally rewarding anymore. Abandonment is more due to frustration with mechanics that dumb the game down and stretch out watered-down content.

Updates used to inspire anticipation… Now they just emphasize the perpetual treadmill for lackluster temporary rewards. All that seems to change is the scenery. Do I really need another mount, or another xmog piece? Meh.

I didn’t quit wow to work out more, or go back to school, or to hit the RL social scene… I quit to switch to games that are better at being entertaining and engaging MMORPGs.

I only pop in here on the forums because after a decade of being a huge fan of this game, I’m still heartbroken that blizzard has obviously given up trying to keep their flagship title a competitive industry leader.

Still having fun is what keeps me playing WOW.

Not gonna read one huge block of words. I will give you credit for using periods though.

From what I gathered from skimming, this is a “dear diary” sort of thread.

I’m too lazy to develop meaningful relationships with other human beings in the real world where I need to exhibit good hygiene practices to attract women and earn the respect of others, so instead I just play video games. I am writing this lengthy post because I need other gamers to validate my poor life choice to devote all of my time to slaying digital dragons as a cartoon wizard and feeling only the cold plastic of my mouse and keyboard in my hands. Please tell me that you also shun the real world because we’ll just get old and ugly anyway and there’s no such thing as being satisfied with working a good job, love, or happy relationships unless I get a pop-up that tells me I earned an arbitrary number of points for doing it.

  1. My grown kids play with me (One is disabled and this is one of his only outlets)
  2. Its one of the cheapest forms of entertainment available.
  3. I have been playing MMORPGs for 20 years and WoW specifically for 15 because I like them
  4. Leveling characters can be almost as mindless as something like Farmville or Summoners War but a lot more fun.
  5. I keep trying other games, but something is always just a bit off (like FFXIV or ESO) or I get pulled back in by my kids.
