Hello! I am new to the Mythic+ scene, and my item level is currently 422.
I received a keystone for 4+ difficulty after a dungeon. Am I a high enough item level to do that? I am afraid of making a group only to wipe and embarrass myself.
How do I know if I am geared enough for a certain level of Mythic+? What is my limit with my current item level? How do I know who to invite when making my own premade group?
A good rule of thumb if I’m tanking is 15 ilvl under what the dungeon drops. So if you’re 422, I’d run anything that drops up to 435, which is m2’s. If you’re dpsing, I’d just run anything lol.
The first 2 levels of M+ (2 and 3) are just boosts to mob/boss health and damage. Gear is a bit of a minor issue for lower keys, it is the affixes/mechanics that will nail you.
Just run your key and see how far you can take it. At some point it will find your limit. There is nothing wrong with trial and error.
Good luck have fun.

Based on my limited experience with season 4 affixes, it seems to go very easy until you hit 10, and then it is ridiculous trying to beat the timer while doing the portals.
That’s because the vast majority of people have not played the portals on the PTR. Why did you expect anything different ? That means that as a responsible group leader you should be doing some explaining, as I’ve had in all my groups so far.
Now I would not recommend giving them a wall of text up front because most people won’t remember. As a tank I tell them I have a route and I link it in case they have MDT installed. I give some brief statements about the first 1-2 obelisks on the route then the others when we get to them on the run. With a few runs of the portals you will realize that samrek is the only tough one of the bunch so focus your instructions on that one the most. Others like the blob can be summarized like “kill tentacles fast, avoid puddles, then move with me and boss towards destination”.
All of this means that you REALLY should be putting “for completion” in your group title for any group 10 or above for at least the first week when so many people are learning this affix. Otherwise someone might get the wrong idea and expect a smooth run and ragequit on you, likely the same people who have not done the affix previously. I’ve also run into a huge amount of experienced people who don’t realize the magnitude of the scaling increase in difficulty relative to last week, like the experienced resto druid I had in my group who figuratively sh*t his pants trying to heal bosses on UR + 13, equivalent to UR + 18 of last week.
