TL;DR: the longer levels against mob with more HP coupled with nerfed heirlooms did it for me. The grind they made just jaded(?) me from the rest of the game.
OK, first let me preface this by saying that I’m no hardcore raider or skill capped PvP junkie, I’m just an average player who’ve been grinding since Vanilla (seriously, at the end of TBC.)
I used to LOVE playing WoW! Getting my first toon to max level in Wrath was possibly the 2nd best feeling in the world!
Grinding random dungeons for coins to buy heirlooms which made it extremely easier to level alts made WoW even more exciting!
Vanilla was a grind, but it was new and very addicting. The rewarding feeling you get from gaining 1% more crit was surreal.
TBC’s grind to 55 with the coolest guild in the world just so I could unlock DK’s when wrath launched was a blast!
Cata made everything new and exciting again, for me. Hell yeah I wanted to level more alts!
MoP…monks were cool…BUT, the Timeless Isles made the grind worthwhile, IMO. What an amusement park!
WoD, people hate WoD, but out of all of the expansions before and after, this was the ONE xpac I literally had to stop playing, so I could concentrate on school work. WoD was basically the bonus round in Super Mario Bros, where you enter a portal, grab as much gold as you can, and return to the real game.
Legion kicked it up a notch, with Class Mounts, powerful Artifact Weapons, various skins, and 2 new endgame zones! I thought this was WoW’s last hoorah.
But, then BfA happened. The pinnacle of WoW’s cinematic team. Banshee Queen screeming, boy kings pulling the Light down from the heavens, forsaken daughters returning to their homeland, this was the expansion that brought us back to our ROOTS, right?
Maybe?
Jaina and the Horde, buddying up again, against an undead foe; the grind being lengthened to vanilla-esque lengths; Thrall getting pulled out of Outlands to fight for the Horde; world PvP being extremely incentivized.
But what went wrong?
In My Opinion,
-
Scaling the zones. It didn’t fix anything. Now, instead of going thru 4 or 6 different zones to get to Outland, all we have to do is get thru 3…and skip Outlands because the XP is crap and the mob take longer to kill. I literally went from level 25-60 all in Duskwood (and a few dungeons). So, my story so far is: I was exiled from Silvermoon for experimenting with the Void, the Alliance took us in, I helped stock a town in Duskwood, then got sent to Northrend to fight against the scourge.
-
Increasing mob HP. This would be GREAT if the max level was 60, but you have to grind thru 120 levels now!
-
Nerfing heirlooms. Granted, heirlooms made it harder for others to enjoy world PvP and Battlegrounds, but that’s the reward for grinding thru the game!
This one did it for me, IMO. Leveling alts was a blast when I could just burn thru mobs and get to the end game, ASAP. Hell, I even RP’ed and used the Storyline Addon before they nerfed heirlooms, because I knew I could enjoy the story without worrying about the long grind. -
Allied Races. Not that they’re bad, but they piled them on us after they made leveling longer and harder to do. So what if they start at level 20, the grind to level 20 is just an intro zone and a dungeon (or 2), but they expect us to grind a 100 levels 8+ times. My gripe with this is that it’s basically a reskin with a new racial.
-
They gave us the Ashbringer….WoW set the bar WAAAYYYyyy too high in Legion, now every xpac has to blow us away. We were kings and queens! We had Azeroth’s greatest weapons!
How I’d fix it?
- Easy, buff heirlooms again, nerf them back down for BG’s and Warmode.
- Decrease mob HP or the amount of mob required to kill per quest.
- Summerize the damn zones. Weed out the BS, so we can experience more zones and get a better grasp on the story on our way to the top instead of just 2 or 3 zones per xpac. Throw in Zidormi to toggle back to the long version for the sentimental.
- Bring the bar back down. Let’s have a nice chill, reset, expansion. The Alliance and the Horde will never be friends, but they’ll also never kill the other off, so…relax for a bit. Maybe give us a Bard or two, to drown our worries.
- What they did with Allied races, but with classes. One completely new class, and maybe an unlockable new spec for each (old) class; THIS would be worth grinding for.
What do you think is wrong with BFA?
And how would you fix it?
