What is with paladins' obsession with kings?

Guardian of ancient kings
Blessing of kings,
Empyrean Power,

Like there’s more than a few abilities referencing these “kings” and like…why?
Does it fall under that old belief of a divine right to rule? That all rulers ordained by the light were meant to be so, and were just and kind?

Because Heck No. :joy:

I’m barely on board with paladins as it is. Any alignment that strays towards lawful is eh in my book - and paladins are chock full of it. I mean they’ve got a talent that’s literally long arm of the law.

WHOSE LAWS???
Whose justice? What are you judging these people for?

Like paladins just have the ability to say “ah, you deserve death. The light, “the force of good” says so. Imma smack you with my hammer.”
And…I dunno. That’s sus. It feels…arrogant? Sure there’s some stuff about self sacrifice and blessings and all but in the end it’s all for the Light, isn’t it? You can judge a wild boar the same way you end up judging Gul’Daniel. Justice is blind, death, dumb, and handed you a nuke basically. They don’t care where you point that thing.

I’m telling you all, right now, we need to get on this quick. If we don’t crush this force of zealous, mindless, self-righteous plate-wearers, we’re gonna have a real problem on our hands.

To all you paladins out there, you know full well you’re just warriors who didn’t wanna put in the effort to learn first aid. :frowning:

More or less. The name of the class originates from the imperial guard of Charlemagne.

“That last paladin offered me eternal salvation.”
“Oh really, what’d you say?”
“Kings, please.”

Gets me every. Single. Time.

“Why be a king, when you can be a god” - Eminem.

They are old timers, crusades and all that cool stuff when you murder, pillage and enslave in the name of Holy Light

Knights served the king and were probably appointed by him. Paladins don’t just serve god, they are knights.

Fealty to thy lord is a deep bond, and I expect it runneth all the deeper for them bygone whom the living can but serve in spirit. 'Tis loyalty given form; to the Light, to theyr King, theyr Lord, theyr Chieftan, and theyr home. Thus methinks the “king” thither mentioned is more metaphor than material.

So the thing about the light is not that it’s not inherently good or attached to good people. There are plenty of examples of “bad” people using the light. The only thing the light cares about is conviction. So yeah they can judge anyone they want and as long as they believe it the light will inflict harm.

Exactly! Which is why the use of it should be monitored especially closely!!

With fel and void magic, or even arcane, they’ve all got an upper limit. Too much void magic? You go nuts. Too much fel? You explode. Too much arcane? You get addicted to it and waste away.

Too much light though? You just increase in power. Continually. There’s no upper limit to a paladin’s power.
We need to nip these weeds before they bud.

Sheesh, someone seems awfully judgy for not being a Paladin.

“You are not my king yet, boy. Nor would I obey that command even if you were!”

Paladins are not slaves of any kings. The Draenei and Tauren don’t even have kings.

lol, warlocks exist in the universe. They harness literal demons and fel to defeat enemies THEY see fit to. I honestly can’t tell if you’re trolling or not??

I dunno… what’s Pandarens obsession with alcohol? They are bears. The last thing on any world that should be getting drunk are bears. We should be more concerned about that imo.

Okay but see, there’s an upper management thing. With a warlock there’s contracts, you know who you’re working for, you kinda know what you’re getting into, even if it’s a cult. Fel magic is notarized goshdarnit.

Warlocks and such know that they’re doing it for power. I’m cool with that. If Wilfred Wizzlebang decides to make a deal with Sargeras to sheep everyone in stormwind, I won’t fault him. He knows the price. He also knows that if he messes up, that’s kinda it. If he’s not careful, his body’ll be a pile of felscarred ash and his soul will be used for some awful thing.

But paladins? They can do whatever they want as long as they feel like it’s right. They don’t have anyone to answer to besides themselves - and someone like Arthas could’ve conceivably been the lich king - and still been a light wielder . It’s a power without checks and balances - and we need to make sure it’s controlled just like the fel is.

A paladin doesn’t though.
