What is the point of seasons?

so…was playing a lot last season got fully geared and enchanted and ya ya ya…took a few months off…

came back and literally the only thing that has changed is the fact that i have to literally start over in the gearing process…

ive done the exact same thing like 1000s of times…its not a small amount of work as we all know…even with the catchup mechanics and giving conquest for non rated stuff its just…like…why?

why do i have to go from being really strong, capable, being able to be competitive and enjoying the game to logging back into the same expansion, with NOTHING different other than then fact that i may as well be a level one character again simply because a day passed and they upped some numbers somewhere. I know its always been like this but i am failing to see the point of playing at all…ITS THE SAME THING…nothing has changed but allllllll the work i do is for nothing…always.

if they dont change this in tww there is just not gonna be any reason to play the game other than like a full year after it comes out and only for like a couple months. there is just no staying power anymore.

at this point progression is just silly, if youre max level and they dont add anything to the game they shouldnt be making all of our work pointless…i know alot of people disagree but i think for most of us this is just getting flat out old and not fun anymore…

thoughts…

This is actually a tough problem to try to solve. The game used to operate on an expansion model rather than a seasonal model. There are pros and cons to both. One of the major cons though is that it means players who don’t keep up with the seasons has a longer path to get ready for subsequent seasons. It was a royal pain in the neck having to swap someone on your raid to another character if say you need a role swap because you had to go back through all the previous raids for gear.

You would have been doing that exact same thing if you took a few months off 10 years ago. Even 14 years ago. Wow became “play the patch” in wrath.

I mean you’ve just pointed out why people might not play something like WoW forever. Come back only when you want to keep at the gameplay again, otherwise take a break.

FOMO and RNG, what a fun combination.

I got a Crunchyroll sub and that takes up my time now…

i guess i didnt notice back then because i didnt have a real life…now i have like…kids, a house to pay for, friends to see…clubs to go to and just…real life adult things. Now to when i put time into something it needs to matter to me. taking a few months away from the game and coming back to see that the only thing thats changed is the amount of work i have to do, that ive already done multiple times…just, isnt appealing. I guess i just hope they change that a bit…simply doesnt make sense its like pissin in the wind and while im playing i am fully aware that its for not… the people who made this game great are older now…i dont know…i guess ive just outgrown it.

You still go clubbing after having kids? You must still be somewhat young 20s/30s.

I understand your point though. In my friendship groups wow players usually are young couples or ones without kids OR ones that started early and have teens by their early/mid 30s.

The ones with 1-2 year olds barely play WoW, we chat but it’s just too much of a timesink of a game to get value for.

Give pvp a go. Gearing is easy and the rest is skill

@ title: engagement is higher during the gear up phases of a patch. So Blizzard made those gear up phases both longer and more frequent. It’s that simple. It resonates with many who still play.

all i do is pvp. thats specifically what im referring too…just a few short months ago i was really having a good time…now im just cannonfodder again and i literally have to resign myself to the fact that for the next few weeks im gonna be playing catchup again and then…after i get there ill do allllll the work to get everything all set up and enjoyable and itll be great…then…boom. if im not sitting here the day the new season starts and staying right there every single day…its just lost.
and i would be fine with that if it wasnt in the exact same expansion with nothing else going on. just doesnt make sense to me…

Well s4 they seem to have greatly upped the conq cap so this seasonw ill be worse.

But you can do bg blitz whihc iirc has scaling so gear discrepancy isnt a thing.

Thatll get you honor gear if you dont have it then yea your screwed for bot having conq.

But you dont lose rating so its just grinding conq and vault.

But honestly the first shot of honor gear can be saved up in the prior season and so day new season your all decked out in max gear. Pvp is the easiest gearing

Bg blitz also gives honor for vault.

thanks for clarifying! I was worried about you for a second there  /teasing

I don’t disagree entirely. I just know that’s how it works for WoW. And truthfully for those of us that are slower and can’t blast through content it’s nice to not worry and just enjoy the ride - despite knowing it’s always a game reset.

Old wow played more to casual players with the expansion.

Today’s wow with seasons demands try harding to min/max every season and devour the content ASAP. Or maybe I have it backwards…

One is min/max go go one is casual.

At least now, all you have to do is current seasons stuff to catch up. Back in ye olden days, you’d have to go through the entire expansion to catch back up.

true…but…why?
like, what is the actual point? if they hadnt introduced a new season. the game would be the exact same game it is right now. and it would be the exact same game it was before.

so adding a season, literally does nothing but make more repetitive stuff that we would be doing anyway…just now, some of us get shafted.

well…alrighty then. if thats the only reason and it truly is that simple i guess i can move on to other things. i dont know many people who play this game for a few days and stop…its usually at least a few months at a time. so if starting a new season gets a bunch of subs and then they just fall off…the people who dont stay will always be behind…that makes absolutely zero sense to me as a business model. why cater to the few who never leave and leave the ones who wanna play casually out in the cold? if everytime i logged into the game during any specific expansion my toon was the same as when i stopped i would be more inclined to play more…but if the bulk of my playing is just trying to get back to where i was a little while ago in the same few month period im already burned out with it by the time i get back…and then its just gonna start over again so…yuk. lol…if they introduced a little more longevity to the toons life over the course of any particular expansion i think the game would just be more enjoyable, clearly im wrong if the numbers state otherwise but…this is why im here…just interested in others opinions not looking for an argument.

They play, get all of their gear over a period of time, get bored of having all the gear, and then take a break until the next patch when they can gear again.

People don’t want to have gear, they enjoy getting gear.

You see this even in older versions of the game to be honest.
