Back in BC there was the “elevator boss”. I remember I would often see the bones of those it killed laying like an offering to its terrible power. I know I died to it more than a few times. The worst is how innocent it looked, until it took your life in one long slow fall.
Vael??? From BWL??? I don’t remember his being either hard or causing “guild drama.”
I mean, if you could pass Razorgore (which actually was hard and had lots of goofy mechanics), but couldn’t pass Vael (which was mostly just a DPS-check… the freaking boss STARTS at a mere 20%!) then frankly your guild deserved to break up.
The only “challenge” I remember from Vael was pacing the tanks so they always kept aggro from the massive dps burst (tracking threat was still a relatively new thing).
But Guild Drama? Guild KILLER??? Never once heard of that from Vael.
Similarly, it gets old reading about C’thun being “hard” when the fight was BROKEN. It wasn’t “nerfed” … it was FIXED. There is a world of difference when it comes to discussing a challenging raid. As someone pointed out, once C’thun was FIXED (not nerfed, but FIXED), he was killed the same day.
The Windows Operating System:
Which I’ve been free of since the Wow Burning Crusade expansion, with OpenSuse Linux.
The day I finally removed the “Vista” partition, for all time, was my greatest “Victory in a boss fight.”
Toss up between Legion KJ and C’thun because they had to be fixed/nerfed before a top guild could even kill it.
Blackfuse
lei shen without enough spell reflect
blackfuse heroic progression was the stuff of legend and nightmare
The elevator boss… all of them. They are sneaking and evil beyond words.
The boss that I’ve heard most often as a guild killer was Lady Vashj in SSC. I did that raid a few times in Wrath and it was hard then too.
In my own raiding experience, the biggest problem boss was the Lich King. We could one shot all the bosses up to him but just couldn’t get him down before Cataclysm launched.
Mythic KJ most likely.
That raid wasn’t helped much by having him as an end boss after mistriss, maiden, and avatar.
Avatar would have been a worthy end boss by itself for any other raid.

Elevator boss. Makes appearances all over the place both inside and outside of instances. Kills players daily without breaking a sweat.
yep. Defias Pillager, was a caster mob that shot fireballs. Most players, especially at that level, didn’t know what they were getting into against them. Since they had range on their attacks, they could snipe players that tried to run.
Then you didn’t raid. The first boss wasn’t that bad but Vael was a dps, tank and healer check.
For one thing, the entire raid needed fire resist. The five tanks needed 315. Everyone else needed 200(ish).
Your five geared tanks needed to be on their A game. Vael’s cleave could take out the entire raid. So every 45 seconds you lost a tank and you prayed your Rogues or Hunters FD during the transition.
Healers had to deal with massive AOE damage and the damage the tanks were taking, especially during the transition.
Vael also killed a dps (or more?) every 45 seconds. The longer the fight goes, the more your overall raid dps decreased.
So, most guilds barely had two geared tanks, much less five. You could spend all your guild’s resources to make sure your tanks had 315 FR only to have ‘em poached by another guild. Or they quit. Take a week off. That’s a hard stop on progression until you get a backup ready.
Vael was the first guild killer in WoW.

The elevator boss no matter what class you play you can never beat it.
i would have to say the litch king. if people didn’t quardanate enough. you could wipe your raid like that.
Oh man I’m so glad someone else agrees with me on Blackfuse.
That fight is insane
belt duty all day baby
Family aggro.
Outside of WoW: look up Trakanon and Cazic Thule (original)
In WoW I am going to have to agree with Mythic KJ. I’d rather do pretty much anything than have to do that fight again.
Two honorable mentions.
-
Heroic Chimaeron 25 man. Ask a healer.
-
Heroic LK. Defile, val’kyrs, target swapping, frost orbs, necrotic plague, and so many other mechanics to deal with.
