What is the "core" WoW Hunter class fantasy?

I feel like there are different tiers of “depth” to WoW Hunter class fantasy. Maybe it’s like an iceberg.

Area Description
Top of the Iceberg Animal companion(s), ranged weapon, traps, tracking, agile.
Bottom of the Iceberg Limited arcane magic, limited druidic magic, limited death/spirit magic, exotic gadgetry, melee weapon(s), animal venoms.

The hero classes seem to lean into:

  • Dark Ranger - Limited death/spirit magic.
  • Pack Leader - Animal companion(s)
  • Sentinel - Exotic gadgetry (?) + limited arcane magic (?) + limited druidic magic (?)

“Hunter” gives a lot of different fantasy elements.

Weaponry - Bows, guns, crossbows, spears, swords, axes, daggers, glaives, poison tipped arrows, darts, traps. Stretch a little bit further and I can definitely see explosives, mortars, bombs, etc, especially in Warcraft.

Armor - Leather or Chainmail

Toolkit - Rugged survival skills, animal companions, partial stealth, simple engineering, simple forms of magic, and tracking.

Major Characters - Aragorn, Legolas, Lara Croft, Geralt, Van Helsing, Selene, Alice, Rambo, Jon Snow, Katniss, Trevor Belmont.

Major Characters from Warcraft - Rexxar, Tyrande, the Windrunner Sisters, Vol’jin, Rok’han, Lor’Themar, Nathanos, Nesingwary, Huln.

General Fantasy Classes - Hunter, Ranger, Scout, Beastmaster, Falconer, Bowman, Rifleman, Tracker, Trapper, Strider, Valewalker.

Warcraft Classes - Beastmaster, Warden, Dark Ranger, Headhunter, Huntress, Shadow Hunter, Mortar Team, Batrider, Wind Rider.

Sentinel and Dark Ranger have pretty specific meanings in Warcraft lore, which is why I’m surprised they’re going in that direction. They both definitely conjure images of elves for me.

A Ranger who uses death magic is a pretty niche theme, but I don’t hate it. Currently Marksman feels a lot like how I’d imagine this be if you ever spec into Wailing Arrow.

I think part of the idea behind hero talents, from the lore perspective, is that we, as characters in the game, are not “becoming” the Dark Ranger, we’re just taking a little bit from their teachings. That makes sense with Dark Rangers being a pretty major part of the story recently, but it doesn’t make me suddenly forget about the fantasy I actually want to fulfill with my character, whether that be Headhunter, Ranger, or Rifleman, or whatever.

I’d be a lot more ok with these choices if they confirmed that they planned to add more later on, like maybe in Midnight we get Demolitionist or Headhunter, for example.

Math here nails it perfectly. It’s a whole lot of things; the original fantasy was based off of Ranger in DnD 2e, and DnD 2e based Ranger off of a slew of things as well. I’d say the core fantasy is a rugged adventurer who protects the realm by slaying the great threats of the wilds. From rabid beasts plaguing the lands to bandits stalking the path, Hunters are WoW’s version of a Ranger. They have a beast companion, they’re self sufficient and work alone, they’re adaptable and able to work in any situation, they’re mobile and sometimes work from the shadows, they tend to be creative with their tools and survival strategies by making traps, explosives, and poisons.

Later on in DnD, they would add simple healing spells to the Ranger’s toolkit, alongside more druid magic. Which was thematically fitting. WoW never did this, so the druid aspect isn’t really there, and it feels like it’s missing as a result.

Hunters are the division between civilization and untamed world. They are usually specialized in tracking a particular prey, human, beast, or unnatural.

They mostly stay away from large population feeling more at home in the wilderness. They may belong to guilds that train them from a young age until they are ready to go out alone.

They have skills in simple magic or nature magic, but mostly rely on stealth and ambush to take out targets.

They prefer range weapons and light wieght short swords, axes, or daggers inorder to move more quickly.

They incapacitate then strike quickly before their prey has the chance to strike back.

bow and cat for the elves

slingshot for the gnomes

I feel hunter is the sole place to find two, sometimes, opposed themes.

Animal tamer and ranged physical damage dealer.

Some play hunter to be an archer and some play to run a zoo. The lucky ones like both.

I think the core fantasy is an adventurer with their pet using an arsenal to make their way in the world

Straight from WOWHEAD:
Hunters come from a variety of backgrounds ranging from trackers to tamers to deadly marksmen. Hunters (with the exception of survival hunters) are unique in that they are only ranged class in World of Warcraft that uses arrows and bullets to deal damage instead of spells. Additionally, hunters are also unique in that they can tame a variety of different animals to assist them in combat as well as utilize a variety of different traps to hinder their enemies.
From Blizzard:
From an early age, the call of the wild draws some adventurers from the comfort of their homes into the unforgiving primal world outside. Those who endure become hunters. Masters of their environment, they are able to slip like ghosts through the trees and lay traps in the paths of their enemies.
Hunters are rugged trackers who can use venom, explosives and traps to damage enemies up close.
Whether wielding bows, guns, or crossbows, hunters are deadly with ranged weapons. They are capable of dishing out consistently high damage.
Hunters tame the beasts of the wild, and those beasts serve in return by assaulting their enemies and shielding them from harm.
Thanks to their pets and damage output, hunters are effective at completing quests and leveling quickly, even when they’re alone.

Whatever the class fantasy is, most of the raid tier sets never match what I think my character’s fantasy is.

It used to be ranged weapons and pets. Now not every spec uses ranged weapons and not every spec uses pets.

Legion diluted the previously strong Hunter class identity.
