The evoker’s Azure Strike spell deals this type of damage. Does this do anything special or is it just flavor?
Spellfrost is Arcane and Frost
Shadowflame is Shadow and Fire
There’s a few combined damage types like these in the game - primarily affects if you cast a spell of those schools and then gets interrupted you get locked out of those schools
So a Warlock could use “Drain Life”, get interrupted, and still cast the Night Fae Covenant ability for an example
Stuff like that
Okay. So if I’m casting Arcane Strike and am, for instance, Counterspelled, am I locked out of casting both arcane and frost spells, or just spellfrost spells?
I’ll use Shadowflame due to knowing my own class better:
Hand of Gul’dan does Shadowflame damage, so if I were to cast it and I get interrupted I’d be locked out from Shadow and Fire
If I cast something such as Immolate instead, I can still cast Shadow spells and as Shadowflame is both a Shadow and Fire spell I can still cast it (despite it being within’ the fire-school I can still cast it due to it being a Shadow spell as well, and I’m not locked out from Shadow)
Just break it down into its different schools
Locked out of Fire: Can still cast Shadow spells including Shadowflame
Locked out of Shadow: Can still cast Fire spells including Shadowflame
Locked out of Shadowflame: Cannot cast either Fire nor Shadow spells
Edit: as folks were right to correct me on, Chaos Bolt is a different thing all together due to being Chaos damage (all schools of magic)
Spellfrost is when Hogrus passes by you in the snow and pauses to shake his lil feeties at you…
Arcane and Frost.
No wonder mages are so ornery.
When this happens. You’re locked out of your Blue spells temporarily. Evokers have red spells and blue spells.
There were a lot of world quest mobs in BfA magni quests casting spellfrost spells.
It used to be super powerful and have an actual meaning to the name but now that all schools of magic behave the same, the name is meaningless. It used to be something to worry about but not any longer.
Only goes good for being locked out of schools of magic for casting. The other function for it was discarded years ago. It mostly is only a fancy name now.
Used to be for buffs and resistances now only used for silences. Wished we still had the old system back as well.
One thing to keep in mind is that spell schools are not the same thing as what you’re describing. While many of the spells in the Blue school are of the Spellfrost school, and many of the Red spells are Fire school, they’re different concepts.
Evokers also have Green, Bronze, and Black spells, and there’s room for overlap in spell schools between all 5.
Chaos bolt does chaos damage not shadow flame.
And to make things more complicated I think chaos bolt is a combination of all schools except holy and physical although it can also include those.
If you get interrupted casting chaos bolt then you are locked out of everything. Conversely you can never be locked out of casting chaos bolt unless you are casting another chaos spell and warlocks don’t have any other casted chaos spells.
Evokers should do Derpfrost damage. It’s a mix of Frost and Cringe damage.
There’s some damage types that are a combination of two or more schools. The only thing it really affects is interrupts.
Say you interrupt a Fire spell from a Warlock. While they’re locked out of other Fire spells, they are still able to cast Chaos Bolt as that is a multi-school spell. As long as they have access to any of the schools that the spell uses (Chaos Bolt is Chaos, which is a combination of every school) they are able to cast the spell regardless of the fact you interrupted one of them.
That’s about the only meaningful part of fancy schools like Spellfrost!
Chaos Bolt does chaos dmg. If you get interrupted, you get locked out of all schools.
Still wish Chaos damage pierced invulnerability shields. Here is the old WotLK version:
Oops… ^^’
I’ll correct that then, and yah’ now that ya’ say it I remember it doing that
I’ll blame it on having played way too much Demonology since at least Hand of Gul’dan does do Shadowflame damage… and the demon doggies increasing that that type of damage ^^’
The spells you want to look for are instant cast multi-school abilities. These are great in pvp because they will continue to function when you are locked out of one of the two schools they include.

We need more froststorm and shadowstrike spells. Those are the cool kid schools.
